The Stargate was discovered buried in Egypt in the early years of the twentieth century. It was stored in a secret government building in the USA for several decades before a project was launched to decipher the gate. Daniel Jackson, an archeologist whose theories about the pyramids being built by aliens are ridiculed in academic circles, is recruited to help, and he translates the writing on the cover stone which permits a successful activation of the device, dubbed the 'Stargate'. Colonel Jack O'Neill leads a team through the gate to the world of Abydos, where he discovers a civilization under the control of an evil alien calling himself Ra. After freeing the people, he returned home, leaving Daniel with his new wife Char'e, on Abydos. He thought that was the last he would hear of the Stargate, but some years later he was recalled to the Stargate Command (SGC), where he is told a being who looked like Ra came through the gate with his soldiers. On returning to Abydos with a new team, including physicist Captain Samantha Carter, and Daniel tells them that the aliens did not come from there. He shows Carter a huge cartouche of Stargate addresses, and they realize that, once the stellar drift changes to the addresses have been calculated, the whole galaxy is open to Earth. On a mission to Chu'lak to rescue Daniel's wife, the team is saved by a soldier (Jaffa) named Teal'c. He leaves with them and joins their new team, SG-1, who will go through the Stargate along with other teams to explore the galaxy and make allies against the Goa'uld. Daniel's wife and the boy Ska'ara from Abydos are taken as hosts to parasitic Goa'uld serpents named Amaunet and Klor'el. The original SG-1 team consisted of Jack O'Neill, Sam Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson and Teal'c. | ![]() |
