Soleful

For many years we trudged along
Making footprints in the snow;
The sole changed as time flew past,
But the shadow remained ever more.

It soon snowed over, and much was lost,
Albeit, re-found recently.
They dusted and learnt forgotten paths
Where once we walked with hope and smiles.

The others then came and broke our present path,
For shame, we claim, and fate, for them;
And next they told how followed, we were,
By other roads and keen, bright eyes.

What could we say, save our soles
Did produce those tracks they caught
Amidst the greatest sun; our aim,
To recommence the inroads ahead.

Will take far longer than we can think,
Imagine or hope, at least, but stepping
Beyond our common sense shall enlighten
The darkest footprints in the snow.
