Conquered

Raising my hands up above my head and
Clawing, grabbing, cursing, reaching, failing.
Step-by-step I climb the hills, flowing from
Peak to trough; my calves now burn red-raw: pain.

More and more I claw and paw; I lunge but
Am benighted. Up nor down I cannot
Move. Please try, Im scared, Youre nearly there, now.

Step down, then up, embraced by the disgust
Of the endemic cold. Goosebumps appear
To mark the end of my journey. The top
Now stands beneath my feet. I have arrived.
