| Nat Turner Rebellion- Started by a self-taught and self proclaimed spiritualist slave, Nat Turner declared that it was the righteous thing to do to overthrow white masters. He killed his master and his family, then got a band of 80 followers and pillaged plantations. Militias went around hanging black in revenge. He was hung. Yeomen- Were semi-wealthy mostly landowners who did NOT own slaves. They might rent them for harvests, but otherwise, they did not use them. They made up the majority of White-Southerners. Southern Code of Honor- Was the idea of protection of Honor and Virtue. Duels would often be declared to defend one�s word and name. IF you did not show to a duel your reputation was mud. Gabriel Prosser- Was a slave that conspired to begin a rebellion but it was betrayed by his fellow schemers. Denmark Vesey- Won a lottery and got his freedom. He became a preacher and got a large audience. He made a plan to attack Charleston and seize arms and munitions. However, the plan was betrayed. Underground Railroad- Was a system of anti-slavery white �conductors� who would secretly work together to get slaves into freedom. It was led by Harriet Tubman and Josiah Henson, who were former slaves that escaped. Fredrick Douglass- Was a slave who stole a sailor�s papers to gain his freedom. He would be educated and become a voice of Black America. He was one of the most prominent abolitionists. Harriet Tubman- She came to run the �Underground Railroad.� After escaping her brutal master, she returned to the south to lead over 200 to safety. When the north passed fugitive slave laws she smuggled them into Canada. |

| Bible Riots- In 1844, Protestants won offices in Philadelphia elections thus allowing vivacious speakers to begin Mob Marches into Catholic neighborhoods over the question of whether or not Catholic Bibles would be used in schools. The riots were quelled after 16 people were killed. Stephen F. Austin- was a rancher in Texas who was the Father of the state of Texas. The city of Austin is named after him. He led the revolution in its beginning days. Sam Houston would later take over. The Alamo- Was an old mission in San Antonio that the famous battle for Texas took place. Davy Crocket died there. It inspired the settlers to fight to the end. Webster-Ashburn Treaty- Was made with Great Britain regarding Maine. More than half of the disputed territory was given to the U.S. It was mostly a political ploy for the Tyler reelection idea. James K. Polk- Ascended to the presidency in 1844. He was a southern Democrat who was an ardent annexationist. He was a wild clever politician who conjured up schemes and stories to get his vote. Manifest Destiny- was a term created by John O�Sullivan to illustrate America�s fate to expand into Texas and to the shores of the Pacific. Zachary Taylor- was a war hero. The Whigs used him as their candidate and ran him on solely his reputation. He won. Battle of Buena Vista- Taking place on February 22-23, 1847, Taylor defeated a Mexican army many times his size. It added to his popularity. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo- Mexico ceded almost all of what is the Southwestern United States. The only good thing for the Spanish was the fact that America would pay 15 million dollars to settle law suits. Wilmot Proviso- Named by a democratic Senator by that name, the proviso stipulated that slavery was not to be allowed in any territory received from Mexico. It infuriated Southerners. California Gold Rush- Begun when a German Farmer�s servant found a bit of gold, thousand of prospectors looking to strike it rich flocked to California. They were called miner 49�ers because of the year in which the rush began. |
