Panic of 1819- was when the land boom collapsed. Banks had let out too much money with little controls and when people could not pat back debts, the economy went to a standstill.

Transportation Revolution- This was the period in the mid 1800�s that changed transportation in America forever. Before only by horse and dirt roads could one get around. Now with steamboats, canals, and railroads popping up everywhere, the population could move west more rapidly, and people could have settlements away form rivers.

Indian removal act- Passed under Jackson�s thumb, the bill allowed the federal government to take the Indian�s land and move the tribes elsewhere.

Worcester v. Georgia- was the famous court case that granted the Cherokees the status as a �distinct political state� that was free form tampering from the state of Georgia.

Erie canal- Was one of the 1st of the state built canals. It was started in 1817, and was finished 1825. It connected buffalo to Albany on the Hudson River.

Lowell mills- Financed by the Boston manufacturing group, the town of Lowell set up a textile mill. The mill produced finished products and employed largely only unmarried women.

Squatters- were people who would settle and develop land that was not theirs, and as such would lay claim to it eventually. They usually were viewed in a low regard and fought with speculators to get the best price on the land.

Speculators- were people who would buy vast tracks of land and sell it piece by piece to make a killer profit. They were real-estate brokers of their day.

Gibbons v. Ogden- was a highly important decision. IT involved breaking the state-granted monopoly on the ferry between NY and NJ. The Supreme Court ruled that the interstate commerce clause of the constitution allowed the federal government to intervene in all cases of interstate trade.

Spoils system- Begun under Jackson, the system incorporates the idea that when you take office you appoint unqualified, but loyal people to federal spots. The idea is used today but is always hated.

Tariff of abominations- Also known as the tariff of 1828, it taxed nearly all goods, and hit the south hard. South Carolina nullified the law.  I nearly caused civil war.

Bank of the United States (BUS)- was chartered by congress as a depository for federal funds. It was nearly killed by Jackson.

American 2 party system- IS the system still in use today. Most people belong to a party. The first two big ones were federalists and republicans, then republicans and democrats, and democrats and Whigs. NOW it is republicans and Democrats. The main idea of the system is that the two parties would control politics and a 3rd party would have to make inroads on the 2 parties.

Second great awakening- started in Connecticut during 1790�s. IT spread to the west and then to the east. The idea of perfectionism came about.  Mormons came about as well as Unitarians. Charles G Finnley was the east�s greatest known protestant minister.

William Lloyd Garrison- was a staunch abolitionist who began the Liberator newspaper. Most intelligent people who were abolitionist and wanting of women�s rights gravitated around him.

Fredrick Douglas- Was one of the most famous Blacks in history. HE was a former slave and he led the blacks to call for freedom form slavery. HE contributed to the Liberator.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton- Led the Seneca Falls Convention. She was one of the founders of the modern women�s rights movement.

Seneca Falls convention of 1848- was a convention on women�s rights that met in Seneca Falls, New York, and created a declaration of women�s rights. It would pas also 12 resolutions on Rights of the woman, and only the resolution on the right to vote would not be passed unanimously.

Dorothea Dix- was a Unitarian teacher who after conducting many studies into the insane persuaded the government to build insane asylums. She contributed much to ensure that the insane were well-treated.

American Temperance Society- Created by evangelical Christians in 1825 advocated total abstinence in liquor. This contradicts what previous groups had been saying that moderation should be the goal of temperance societies.
