| Greenbacks-Were invented under Lincoln to counter the economic strain left by the lack of specie. It was paper money who�s value would depend on the faith in the government. National Bank Act- Due to the lack of Democrats in Congress, Republicans passed the National Bank Act that re-established a national bank idea. It allowed banks to apply for a federal charter to print money. Anaconda Plan- Was a Union strategy to blockade ports, and take control of borders and the Mississippi River to strangle the CSA�s economy. It was developed by Winfield Scott, who believed southern unionists would take over. Battle of Bull Run- The first Battle of the War, the battle was a resounding CSA victory. It was the famous battle where unionists watched thinking victory would come swiftly, but Beauregard swept them away with reinforcements. George B. McClellan-Was the General who replaced McDowell. He led the Union to victory in Antietam, but was fired for not pursuing Lee. Robert E. Lee- Offered Command of Union Forces, Lee turned it down and led the Rebel army in Virginia. He was the best general of the Confederates. Battle of Antietam-In Southern Maryland, the bloodiest battle of the war occurred. Over 60,000 people were killed. It was a draw but it forced a Confederate retreat. Ulysses S. Grant-The union general who took Vicksburg, and would later defeat Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. Battle of Shiloh-Was when the Confederates nearly killed Grant�s army in Tennessee, but Grant held the Line forced a Union Win. Trent Affair- Was when a union ship captured the British Vessel the Trent that carried the 2 southern Diplomats, Slidell and Mason. It caused a foreign uproar. Homestead Act- granted 160 acres of public land to the people who had been living on it for more than 5 years. Morrill Land Grant Act- The bill gave the states the proceeds of the sales of public lands. It spurred the development of state Universities. Copperheads- were the peace Democrats that demanded an immediate peace and a peace treaty. They were likened to copperhead snakes for their capabilities at hiding. New York Draft Riots- In opposition to the draft for the war, thousands of people marched and rioted against federal authority. It had to be quelled by federal troops over many dead bodies. It was mostly Irish that rioted. |
| Radical Republicans- Were those that made up the faction of the Republican Party that hated slavery with a purple passion, and despised Johnson. They tried to impeach him. 10%plan- Designed by Lincoln, the plan stated that 10% of legal voters had to swear an oath to the union for it to become a state again. Wade-Davis bill- was passed by congress and Lincoln vetoed it. It required states to be ruled by a military governor and have a majority of its population take a loyalty oath to the union. Freedman�s Bureau- Was created by the Feds to work on protecting the Black man�s rights. It set up schools and offices for them. Civil rights act of 1866- To invalidate the black codes, the act declared blacks citizens and guaranteed equal protection under the law. Congress overrode the veto to pass it. Reconstruction act of 1867- Another congressional act that was vetoed and overridden, made the governments set up under the presidents invalidated, it divided the CSA into 5 military districts, and set more requirements for re-entering the union. Tenure of Office Act- Yet another veto-overridden bill, it stipulated that the president could not fire a person w/o senate approval. I would lead to his impeachment. Scalawags- Were Southerners, poor and uneducated who would seek to profit form Republican rule. Carpetbaggers- Were northerners who would come to the south in search of profit, form the recent implosion of the old economy. Enforcement acts- A series of 3 acts were passed under veto override, only to be struck down by the USSC that would seek for the protection of Blacks� rights, and the banning of the Klan. Panic of 1873-Started by rampant speculation and the collapse of the largest national bank, a 5 year depression was born. A dispute was rising over whether or not to use greenbacks. Compromise of 1877-Coming out of a disputed election, the Democrats threatened to hold up the certification of the votes indefinitely. The GOP and the Democrats met at an old hotel and discussed terms of compromise. In the terms were that the Democrats would turn over the Whitehouse to Hayes, treat blacks fairly. In return troops would be pulled out of the South, and they would get $ for federal improvements. |
