| Alpha and beta blocker/antihypertensive which produces decrease in BP without concurrent reflex tachycardia or significant reduction in heart rate through mixture of alpha blocking/beta blocking effects. Elevated plasma renins are reduced. | |||||||||||||

| Common Side Effects: orthostatic hypotension, bradycardia, NVD, tinnitus,. Potentially Lethal Side Effects: CHF, Ventricular dysrhythmia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, pupura, bronchospasm. |

| Contraindications: Beta blocker hypersensitivity, cardiogenic shock with 2nd or 3rd degree, sinus bradycardia, CHF, bronchial asthma. |

| Adult dosing: Hypertension with possible aortic aneurysm, encephalopathy IV: Slow push q 10-20 min 5-20mg, Max 60 total. |

| Notes: * Acute lowering of BP may actually cause further harm to the patient by mechanism of sudden underperfusion of end organs. |
