J.T. getting air at Vinnie's, Duluth MN 1979
Back to History
This was my first BMX bike, a Torker.  It cost $125 and want to thank Twin Ports Cyclery for not having a Redline and steering me towards the Torker.  They gave me the nickname "The Torker Kid" and it stuck all through my racing career.

I soon found out about better parts and added new alloy wheels, alloy Race Inc. bars, Tuff Neck stem, Oakley grips, Addicks sprocket, Troxel seat, fluted seat post, Xcaliber clamp, MKS pedals, and hand brakes!
Before I had the chance to add all those parts I had my first race in Brooklyn Park.  I was blown away by all the fast dudes there and learned a lot.  I learned to not get the outside gate position but was too shy to move to the inside.  In those days you just fought for the gate position.  I did well and got third in my first moto.  The second wasn't too good.  I was dicing for second and got T-boned which threw me off my bike and got ran over by the later guys.  My elbow was a bloody mess and was shook up pretty good.  I wasn't myself for the third moto and got third again.

Oh well, live and learn!  I went home and did my homework at my track, got better parts, and trained, trained, and trained!
