1996-1997: Corn Valley Beginnings

Return to main Shiv page.

Yapping with the folks I started work with, I learned that I could play soccer and ultimate at lunchtime here at HP. It's a pretty sweet deal. I come in to work in the mornings, grind away for four hours, play disc or soccer for an hour, clean up and eat lunch, and finish out my day. On top of that, I love my job and get paid way too much. Life here is good. Anyway, lunchtime was the place that got me seriously hooked on ultimate. I played disc 3 times a week for about the first year and a half I was here and got to know some of the folks that took me to my first tournaments.

1996

UPA Oregon Sectionals (Corvallis, OR) - I don't remember much about this team. It was my first tournament. I think it was mostly a group of men from HP. We must have won one or two games (likely beating some college teams or other lowly squads.) I also remember playing Rhino in the first elimination round. (We scored 1!) If nothing else, it got me noticed as someone interested in tournaments.

1997

Mud Bowl (Eugene, OR) - Again, it was likely some of the vets from HP who put this together.

Ashland Cramp-Up (Ashland, OR) "Win Tie Dye" - My first co-ed event! I joined the "Win Tie Dye" folks (a Corvallis Summer League team) and was hooked on the fun and culture of the event. Thanks to Craig Olbrich for getting me on the team and "Binge" [a team from the bay area] for showing me what co-ed is all about! [Looking hot, playing hotter and, above all, having a damn good time.]

Slugfest (Corvallis, OR)- More of the same. (I really don't remember anything about it, but I'm sure I played.)

HP Tournament (Santa Rosa, CA) "HP Corvallis"
What do you get when you mix some high energy rookies, a solid band of vets and a roster a mile long? A second place bunch of engineers. We dominated most of the day, but the Sonoma State all-stars had more gas at the end.

First Co-ed Tournament: Ashland Cramp-Up 1997 HP Santa Rosa Tournament 1997 Corvallis City Leage Championship {Whore} Team: Fun HP Squad

Corvallis Summer League: (Corvallis, OR) "Hucking Prophets" - Tim Koch and the other vets were tired of running the HP team, so they convinced me to be captain. I was happy to do it because I got to change the name from boring old Hewlett Packard to silly and pointless Hucking Prophets. [How clever.] We had a good squad and finished the regular season near the top of the league. At the final tournament, the few of us who showed joined the powerhouse whore team (including a bunch of Fun Squad folk, Alex, and a new arrival to town, Chris Sheridan.) We won the title and ensured that no whore teams would be eligible to win the Corvallis title as long as Doug Oetter ran the league.

Spawnfest (Bellingham, WA) - Doug Oetter grabbed Jim Shur and me and dragged us up to this. We had a haphazard squad, but with Doug and Mel running the handling spot, we did better than we should have and possibly won more games than we lost.

Sectionals (Corvallis, OR) - I think we put together a Corvallis men's squad. I have only vague memories of this event.

U of O Hat Tournament (Eugene, OR) - Silam bought a skirt to save $5 on the tournament fee. I got one because it seemed like a fun thing to have. I don't remember much more than the layout contest at the beginning of the day, the fact that the sand fields were a little rough on the skin and that I had a great time.
