Skills, Drills and Other Ultimate Practice Ideas
Return to Shiv's Main Page .
I'll get around to full descriptions some time. Until then, maybe these short descriptions will jog your memory or give you new ideas.
Basic Throwing, Running, Cutting and Catching
Throwing Lines - Warm up with forehands, backhands, (including in/out and out/in variances.) For diversity, move to progressively longer distances or try to race to a given number of completed passes in a row race.
Run Through - Simple run and catch drill to practice maintaining speed through the catch. (Add loopa or angled cuts for variation.)
Box - Lines at each corner of a ~40 yaard box. Start with straight cuts and advance to in/out and out/in cuts. Throw forehand and backhand.
Perpendicularity - Similar to box but with throw directly down line to work on timing throws that are perpendicular to the cut.
Crescent Dump - Continuous series of dump passes and clearing that move the disc in an arc across the field.
Slam - Medium to short distance hard throwing. (Just something dumb Si-lam and I do when we're goofing around. I don't know if it has any redeeming qualities.)
Dump Drill - TBD
Conditioning (Playing when Tired)
Triangle - Simple three person give and go drill.
Diagonal Box Deuce - Same as above but with perpenticular cuts. Disc moves in a box.
Downfield Weave - Ultimate version of common basketball drill.
Busy Bee - Three person conditioning back and forth cut and throw drill.
Z-Drill - Similar to Busy Bee but with angled fake and anti-cuts.
Run Away Bee - Two person version of Busy Bee with over the shoulder throws to away cuts.
Diagonal Cut Box - Similar to basic box drills but with diagonal cuts.
Cutting
First Cut - Simple 2 on 2 cutting drill. Start with the four simplest cuts: strong to break, break to strong, power through and in to away. Later add defense.
Basic Continuation - Two continuation throws working on timing the cuts and first cut going for huck.
Breakaway - Endzone breakaway drill that uses line and anti-cuts. (Red's version adds defense on man and poachers @ back of endzone or mark on disc.)
Throwing Under Pressure and Zone
50 Fakes - Pair up and practice pivoting and faking to break the mark.
Breakmark - Three person throwing drill with straight-up mark
Circle Jerk - Large circle sets up around a three person cup. Bad throws are punished with laps around circle or exchanging with member of the cup. Make it harder by having the defense check the disc before every throw or starting the stall at 5.
Standard Cup - Practice cup movement together and handler swings. (Maybe later add line of semi-stationary poppers behind cup.)
Sideline Trap- Simulate escaping from a sideline trap. Use variations in number and positioning of D and O.
Combinations
Rodeo Barrels - Running after the throw, timing of cuts and a lot of running around cones.
Cousin Joe's Continuation - More advanced continuation that employs a first cut, lookoff/fake upfield, dump, swing continuation and loopa cuts.
Endzone O- Standard front corner cut from the back of the stack, dump and swing for the cut on the other side. Try adding a defender on the cut from the back and find ways to incorporate practice of your endzone plays.
Handler Flow Drills
Dump & Swing Weave - Three person dump and swing to advance disc.
Gametime Weave - Simulation of three person dominator with give and go followed by lookoff and partner switch.
Give, Go & Huck - Four person drill that adds a continuation cut to the Gametime Weave.
Dominator - If you use it in a game (either as a play or as handler flow), why not practice it as a 3-on-3 drill with no hucks allowed?
Scrimmage Systems
10 Pulls - Scrimmage system to enforce value of the disc.
Double or Nothing - Scrimmage system that resets after score for endzone O practice.
Junk Defense - Scrimmage system that has both teams come up with a unique junk defense. Emphasises communication and adaptation for both sides.
Miscellaneous
Switch - How about a 2-on-2 (plus a thrower) drill on a narrow field to practice switching?
Huck It - Why not call sending two people long and hucking it to them a drill? Practice reading and fighting for those ill-advised hucks.
Layout - Run layout practice off of box or circle jerk setup.
