Though we are overwhelmingly gratified by the high level of interest, we have struggled mightily with the results. In one week, we received a total of 25 bids for the 12 available spots (there are 15 total, with Ashland's own filling out two teams and last year's winners taking a third spot). So, brace yourselves now, as over half of you did not get in. You cannot know how much we regret this, and we will go on at length in a little while as to why things are the way they are. The very shortest version I can manage, however, goes thusly: Of the 25 bids received, 17 were postmarked on March 8th. Since we obviously received more bids on the very first day possible than we have spaces available, only those bids which arrived with a March 8th postmark were considered. Given the almost nonexistent level of confusion we heard about regarding our bid process this year we felt we had to honor that process and reward those teams that got their bids in "on time". You've no doubt done the math yourselves by now and understand that 5 of these 17 equally timely teams did not get in to the CrampUp. Each of us had our favorites, we know people on every team in contention, we all extolled at length regarding the spirit and/or skills of various players and of entire teams. After a great deal of vigorous debate, discussion, dialogue and drama (this IS the home of the Shakespeare Festival, after all) we left it to a random, blind hat draw to fill the remaining available spots. I speak for all of Ashland Ultimate, I think, when I say we draw the line at shoving any of these checks anywhere...... So, this is how it shakes out this year, and we stand by the method and the results. We went into it all thinking that this process would provide the fairest, most equitable scenario and we believe the results bear this out. More detailed tournament information will follow in the coming weeks. Again, a humble thanks and a bow of gratitude for the incredible interest you've shown in the CrampUp. troy ashland ultimate ANSWERS TO POTENTIAL QUESTIONS (aka WHY THINGS ARE THE WAY THEY ARE) Q. Why the $%#@! don't you make the tournament bigger? A. Because we are at the limit of what our infrastructure can provide. In short, no more fields. Ashland has an overall population of about 18,000 people. For a town this size, we have an incredible number of adults and kids involved in organized field sports. Adult and youth softball and baseball, adult and youth soccer, track and field, and adult rugby come immediately to mind. Given a number of recent construction projects we are also minus a significant chunk of "open" field space. Some of this construction, happily, will provide more athletic fields in the future. But even at full capacity the fields are tightly scheduled. We put in our initial field request for CrampUp 6 within a week after last year's tournament, and it has required constant vigilance and reminding over the following year to make sure we (Ashland Ultimate/ CrampUp) don't drop "out of sight, out of mind" in favor of the "established" or "traditional" sports. In the end we have been allotted the maximum number of fields we can get given the demand. Remember that 18,000 people I spoke of? Extrapolate your total number of Ultimate players from there, and distill further to get the number of those committed and dedicated to running a tournament. IT TAKES EVERY ASHLAND ULTIMATE PLAYER TO GET IT DONE. Anyone who's done it knows a tournament is a pile of work. So, why should we bother? The actual competition is only one aspect of the CrampUp for us. The CrampUp was created as an opportunity for us to revel in our culture with old and new friends and personally see to it that every person who attends has as great a time as possible. We have worked hard over the years to craft a tournament which provides the maximum opportunity for everyone in attendance to celebrate Ultimate and their part in it with everyone else. Anything else is not the CrampUp. So, even if the fields allowed it(which they do not), we would be unable to host more people in the manner we think is necessary for a CrampUp experience. And if we did we'd lose the reason we put the shindig on in the first place. PLEASE NOTE: You would be mistaken to infer from this an opinion any one of us might have about any other tournament! Every tournament has it's merits. This is purely put forth so that you might better understand why WE do OUR thing, and why we can't make it any bigger. Q. Why two teams for Ashland at the expense of a guest from elsewhere? A. According to my phone list, there is probably a floating roster of about 40 players here. Perhaps a third of that number, or less, has a life which allows them the luxury of occassionally traveling to tournaments. We can count our "elite" players on one hand, the one involved in a farming mishap. Many of you can probably identify with this when you consider the number of folks in your city leagues and compare it to the number who are willing/able to travel, and finally to those that play on established club teams. For alot of our players, this *is* their tournament experience for the year, and they look forward to it. As I said, we need all of us to throw this affair. Almost everyone on my phone list will contribute to make the CrampUp work, many of them because it's their one opportunity to play in a tournament. Also, we make more money this way (he said, jokingly). But seriously, we do. Every Ashland Ultimate player pays to take part in the tournament, in addition to working some aspect of the event. In an effort to keep costs somewhat reasonable we spread them across every team, including our own.
