Presidents Remarks

The Deai

espite the terrible weather, I said good-bye to my friends at the airport feeling very satisfied and contented with the workshop of ‘the Deai.’ I hadn’t seen these old friends for awhile and I hoped to exchange news. They came in the rain carrying breakfast rolls, and coffee early Sunday morning. The moderator, Ms. Harashima was very gracious and pleasant introducing the teaching material. Barber-sensei shared her lesson plan that she had worked and tried in the class, and she had kept us on agenda. I had learned wonderful and warm facts from each one of the Dallas teachers who were there. I felt very good about everything that day.

I checked in at a gate to confirm my boarding pass. Clerk told me the gate # had changed. Many flights had been delayed due to the weather. Many flights cancelled, and passengers wandering around in the airport increased. Finally the airport was closed about 10p.m. To make the long story short, I stayed overnight at a Dallas hotel. Next morning, flights were still messed up, cancelled, or destination airports closed. By this time, I recognized some faces that had been trying to get Houston. I decided I was not going to wait for the next flight to Houston, which would depart 5:30 p.m., Monday. A man asked me if I would join him and his friend taking the bus.

We took a taxi to the bus terminal, and we got on the Gray Hound Bus, heading southward, finally. I was surprised how comfortable the ride was. There were interesting people and different atmosphere. I was the only Asian in the bus. I finally got home around 1:30 p.m.

I thought of my weekend; it began with wonderful visits with friends, fulfilling workshop and fellowship. I had so much frustration and fatigue, but I’ve got to ride the Gray Hound Bus that I have always wanted to ride ever since I came to this country. I met wonderful people in the midst of selfish people during this ordeal.

After all, the Deai workshop had expanded more than I expected and I had a few ‘deai’ with wonderful people. I gained back my satisfaction and contentment that night.

Thank you.
