Rari, where have you been?
Dirty Water
Words by: Ed Cobb
Performed by: The Standells on the album Dirty Water (1966)
I'm gonna tell you a story I'm gonna tell you about my town I'm gonna tell you a big bad story, baby Aww, it's all about my town Yeah, down by the river Down by the banks of the river Charles That's where you'll find me Along with lovers, fuggers, and thieves Well I love that dirty water Oh, Boston, you're my home Frustrated women Have to be in by twelve o'clock But I'm wishin' and a-hopin, oh That just once those doors weren't locked Well I love that dirty water Oh, Boston, you're my home Because I love that dirty water Oh, oh, Boston, you're my home Well, I love that dirty water I love that dirty water
The only reason i even know this song is because i used to listen to the 45 when i was a little kid. I've got a best-of LP of The Standells, on which they call them "thee" punk rock band of the 60s. Well, i don't know about that, but this is a great song.

Heavy Water {excerpt}
Words by: Ian Anderson
Performed by: Jethro Tull on the album Rock Island (1989)
She was a southern girl, we stared man to man. I move like a stranger in this strange land. She was a round hole, I was a square peg. I watched the little black specks running down her leg. Didn't seem to mind that dirty rain coming down - Shirt hanging open, she was wet and brown. Thumping in my heart, and it's hurting me to see. Smokestack blowing, now they're pouring heavy water on me. Oh, pouring heavy water on me.
Anderson wrote this song about his first trip to New York. Apparently it started raining on him & the water made dirt marks on his clothes. This verse, however, seems to be about him not fitting in, which he probably didn't.

Frankie's all grows up.

Cold Water {excerpt}
Words by: Tom Waits
Performed by: Tom Waits on the album Mule Variations (1999)
I look 47 but I'm 24
This isn't one of my favorite Waits songs, but i love this line. I've got one more year and this will be me.

No!
Water {excerpt}
Words by: Pete Townshend
Performed by: The Who as the B-side to 5:15 (1973)
Indian Lake is burning New York's skyline is hazy The River Thames is turning dry The whole world is a blazin' We need water Good water We need water And maybe somebody's daughter
The Who originally performed this song in the 1970/71 era. It was part of Lifehouse, i think. Anyway, who among us (guys & dykes, at least) couldn't use someone's daughter?

I call that a bargain.
Dirty Water {excerpt}
Words by: Pete Townshend
Performed by: Pete Townshend on the album Scoop (1983)
When you tune up the top and you feel all the crap And you rustle a little musk for don't ya make a fuss It's dirty water swiming in the dirty water Swimming in the water And it's all gona clear up someday Leave a little time, won't ya drink a little wine And in the meantime Play with the Grecian Hawaiian five in the water Let's roll in the water, swiming in the water It's all gonna clear up someday
This was a demo Pete recorded lying on his back in the studio. I think that's all you need to know about this song. And if it isn't, too bad, cos that's all i know about it.
