Special Report  UPDATED : 10/21/97-  Just got back from fishing again aboard the "Sum Fun" out of Dana Wharf. I must say we did much better than I did last week but it was not nearly as good a day as they had yesterday (351 Yellowfin for 172 anglers). The 34 of us took only 17 Yellowfin. We did however, find some huge paddies in the morning that were holding good schools of Yellowtail in the 3-8 pound range. The final count on the Yellowtail for us was 140 although I'm not sure if we took quite that many. I'll give them the benifet of a doubt. As for me, I caught 4 Yellowtail and 1 tuna. We got bit by the tuna only once. It was about noon and we were somewhere around the 279 fathom bank. We found them under some porpoise and had a pretty good bite going for about 15 min. MANY fish were lost. The pinner baits that we had only allowed us to use about 20 pound mono. Anything heavier would drag your bait down and you wouldn't get bit. They were also ignoring the iron. I had lost two during that bite and was very frustrated. As the day drew on and no more tuna were being found I was really getting disapointed. Nobody was getting hit on the troll so I decided to change my feather over to a Rapala CD-18 mackerel pattern. It was about 4 pm and we were heading in when I heard some glorious music in my ears. It was my Penn International screaming away. Hookup!! people were screaming. My rod was bendo. This was no Skippie. I had caught the last and only troll tuna of the day. You can bet that I had a grin from ear to ear as I held up a fat 22 pound Yellowfin. Nothing else was picked up on that jig stop and we continued to head in without any further distractions. (we were already late). Overall, I was a little dissapointed that we didn't get into them like they did yesterday, but when we got to the dock I had learned that we did way better than anyone else except for a private charter that had limits (40) for thier 4 passangers. Not a bad day!!

Ventura / Oxnard  UPDATED : 10/21/97-  Very little action on the surface species. Calicos are cooperating nicely at the islands.

L.A. Area  UPDATED : 10/20/97-  Local Yellowtail action very good with some better 12-15 pound fish showing.

South Coast  UPDATED : 10/21/97-  Lots of Yellowtail on the beaches of Dana Point and Oceanside. The tuna are just a few mile offshore and fishing can be great if you find the porpoise.

San Diego  UPDATED : 10/22/97-  Still a good bite going on on the Tuna at Coronado Canyon. The Point Loma had 23 today for 19 anglers. Slow fishing locally on the kelp.

Offshore  UPDATED : 10/22/97-  S.D. 1 day boats continue to do well on the Yellowfin at 40-60 miles. The Producer took 71 Yellowfin, 37 Dorado, and 36 Yellowtail for 24 anglers today. Cortez Banks are kicking out some quality 30 pound Yellowtail. The Albacore bite in Morro Bay continues to improve for hog fish to 80 pounds. A potential world-record 88 pound Albacore is being verified in Santa Cruz right now. The fish was taken by a private boater.

Islands  UPDATED : 10/20/97-  Good Yellowtail fishing at Catalina and San Clemente with boats getting counts in the 20-50's range. Some are quality fish to 20 pounds. Yo-yoing the iron has been working well. Very little fishing at Coronados with all the Tuna in the canyon.
