At one point in time the answer was pretty clear -- the communists. Communism was a pretty easy target. Most people were able to accept state ownership of the means of production as being opposed to American ideals. Today our foe is less easy to target.
America espouses the ideal of freedom from religious persecution. In the post 9/11 era, our foe hides behind the veil of Islam. It garners support from those who are not necessarily opposed to America, but who support those who claim to be Islamic. Nonetheless, those who threaten the health, safety, or welfare of Americans are America's foes. Those who support them are also our foes.
Because our foes and their supporters do not publicly announce themselves, America faces a particularly challenging battle. The enemies of our state will attempt to divide America by claiming the 9/11 war violates one of our fundamental ideals -- freedom from persecution.
