SEPTEMBER 2008

If you are tempted to reveal

A tale by someone told

About another, make it pass,

Before you speak, three gates of gold.

Three narrow gates: first, Is it true?

Then, Is it needful? In your mind

Give truthful answer. And the next

Is last and narrowest- Is it kind?

And if to reach your lips at last,

It passes through these gateways three,

Then you may tell the tale, nor fear

What the results of speech may be.

(Henry Durbanville)

Sub:  Prayer for peace and for Our Missionaries.

In the wake of the recent violence unleashed in the Kandhamal District of Orissa and the killing of Swami Lakshmananda Saraswati and his four associates in the Ashram, which the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of India (CBCI) has strongly denounced and condemned, there have been unwarranted attacks on Christians and their houses and institutions in the same district and neighbouring areas.

While I express my deep anguish at the tragic events and pray for the deceased and their bereaved families. I am seriously concerned about the safety of innocent people who are helpless victims of the rampant and unchecked violence.I urgently appeal to the Central and State Governments to take all possible measures required to maintain order and peace in all the affected areas and to prevent further attacks on Christians and other innocent people. As a mark of true solidarity with our suffering brothers and sisters and as a protest against all acts of communal violence and, in particular, recalling the brutal murder of our dear Fr. Thomas Pandippally, CMI, I declare that all our Catholic schools, colleges and other educational institutions be closed on Friday, August 29, 2008, and I wish that everywhere peaceful marches/rallies be conducted with black flags’ demonstration in a truly prayerful spirit.I also declare Sunday, September 7, 2008, as a Day of Prayer  and Fasting and I hope that in all our Dioceses, our Churches, parish communities and all Church institutions/organizations will hold prayer services and memorial gatherings on this day, highlighting the need for our solidarity with all the victims and prayers for all our Missionaries in India, who are facing most trying and difficult times for the sake of the Gospel. Indeed, ‘the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christianity’. Let us fervently pray that in our days righteousness may flourish and peace abound throughout our country and the whole world. Invoking upon you all God’s abundant blessings and mercy and in union of prayers,

Yours sincerely,

Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, C.Ss.R

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI FOR THE 2008 WORLD MISSION  DAY (Summary)

The missionary mandate continues to be an absolute priority for all baptized person who are called to be ‘servants and apostles of Christ Jesus’ at the beginning of the millennium. “Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity” (Evangeli Nuntiandi No.14) It is the Pauline year which offers us the opportunity to become familiar with the famous apostle who received the vocation to proclaim the Gospel to the Gentiles, according to what the Lord had announced to him: “ Go, I shall send you far away to the Gentiles”. (Acts 22:21)

1.        1.        Humanity is in need of liberation:  Humanity needs to be liberated and redeemed. Creation is suffering and waiting for real freedom, it is waiting for a different, better world; it is waiting for “redemption”.

2.      2.        The mission is a question of love:  It is an urgent duty for everyone to proclaim Christ and his saving message.  It is the spiritual energy that can make the harmony, justice and communion grow among persons, races and peoples to which everyone aspires. It is God, who is Love, who leads the Church towards the frontiers of humanity and calls the evangelizers to drink “from the original source, which is Jesus Christ, from whose pierced heart flows the love of God”

3.      3.        Evangelize always: It is important to reaffirm that even in the presence of growing difficulties, Christ’s command to evangelize all peoples continues to be a priority. No reason can justify its slackening or stagnation because “the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church”. (EN No.14)

4.      4.        Woe to me if I do not preach it! (1 Cor9:16): A Bishop is consecrated not only for his diocese, but for the salvation of the whole world ( RM 63). Like the apostle Paul, a Bishop is called to reach out to those who are far away and do not know Christ yet or have still not experienced his liberating love. Priests, the first collaborators, be generous pastors and enthusiastic evangelizers! Men and women religious, whose vocation is marked by a strong missionary connotation, bring the proclamation of the Gospel to everyone, especially those who are far away, through consistent witness to Christ  and radical following of his Gospel. The faithful laity, who are in different ares of society are called to take part in an increasingly important way in spreadeing the Gospel. Give witness with your lives that Christian “belong to a new society which is the goal of their common pilgrimage and which is anticipated in the course of that pilgrimage (SS No.4).

5.      5.         Conclusion: Dear Brothers and Sisters, may the celebration of World Mission Day encourage everyone to take renewed awareness of the urgent need to proclaim the Gospel.  May the collection that is taken in all the parishes on World Mission Day be a sign of communion and mutual concern among the Churches. Lastly, may prayer be intensified ever more in the Chrisitan people, the essential spiritual means for spreading among all peoples the light of Christ, the “light par excellence” that illuminates “the darkness of history”.(Spe Salvi,49)
