JAMSHEDPUR DIOCESE

          Vol. XXXVIII No. 06

JAMSHEDPUR, INDIA

JUNE 2008

My garden has roses red, my garden has roses white,

But if, when the day is sped, I stand by the gate at night,

One fragrance comes when the day is sped, from my roses white and my roses red.

The roses of joy are red; the roses of pain are white.

But I think, when the day is sped, and I stand by the gate at night,

I shall just know this, when the day is dead, that a rose is sweet, be it white or red.

Tourism Council Grants Rs. 6.5 Million for Palayur Church Development: Thrissur District Toursim Promotion Council has sanctioned Rs. 5.5. million for the development of Saint Thomas archdiocesan Shrine at Palayur. According to tradition, St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, came by sea and landed at Kodungallor in 52 A.D and from here he proceeded to Palayur, Rector of the Shrine, Father Louis Edakalathor, told SAR News May 10. Jubilee Year of St. Paul the Evangelist:  A special jubilee year marking the 2000th anniversary of the birth of St. Paul begins next month, providing an opportunity to refocus on the Church’s primary mission of evangelization. A Conversion Experience – in the extreme- is the centerpiece of the story of St. Paul. Originally named Saul, he was a Pharisee born in Tarsus (present-day Turkey) sometime between 5 and 10 A.D.

Ann Ball’s “A Litany of Saints” recalls that Saul, a scrupulous observer of Mosaic law, hated the new Christian church an sought permission to go to Damascus and arrest every believer in his path. On the way, however, he was knocked down from his horse by a blinding light and the voice of the Lord asking, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?”. When his sight returned, the transformed zealot travelled the world, preaching about his new-found faith. He adopted the name “Paul” from one of his converts. Paul reputedly financed his extensive travels by working as a tentmaker. He was beheaded during the persecution of Nero and is thought to be buried in the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.

Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed a jubilee year to celebrate the second millennium of the saints birth. This Pauline year will run from June 28, the vigil of the saint’s feast day with St. Peter, to June 29, 2009. (+Extension)
