D I O C E S A N   R O U N D – U P :

 

Sacred Heart Church, Adra : The solemnity of the feast of the Visitation of Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated on May, 31. The faithful assembled at the Blessed Mother Teresa Chowk at 5.30 p.m. and began the Rosary procession to the Church. The celebration concluded with a solemn Mass in the Church presided over by the Fr. Jerome Pereira, the Parish Priest.

The solemnity of the feast of the Sacred Heart, the Parish Feast was celebrated on Sunday, June 25. Fr. Sushil Suman Kerketta, S.J. was the Chief Celebrant of the feast day Eucharist in the church at 7.30 a.m.. Immediately after the Mass, all shared breakfast in jubilation and celebration. The clergy and religious of the nearby communities reached for a sumptuous lunch at 1.00 p.m. with the Parish team.

 

Catholic Ashram, Purulia:  Bro. Sonu Hansda returned from NISCORT after the completion of the Pastoral programme on June 5. The 66th birthday of Fr. Hilary Lobo was celebrated on June 03 with a special Mass and visitors crowding the campus all day. The community had a special meal at noon to commemorate the day.

On May 31st morning all were surprised to witness the statue of Our Lady from the Grotto fallen on the ground. Fr. Manu concluded the real cause as the strong breeze at night.  The statue is safely put back at the grotto. The hostel children gave a fond farewell to Bro. Sonu after his return from NISCORT and extended a cordial welcome to Bipin Barla.

 

Damien Social Welfare Centre, Dhanbad: The Nirmala campus gave a fond farewell to Fr. Michael Raj on May 30 before he left for SEARSOLIN on May 31. He reached the University on 2nd morning and classes are in progress. Fr. Michael will return at the end of December after the completion of the developmental training in Philippines.

 

Pratiksha, Neeldungri :   After the arrival Fr. Ajay from NISCORT, Fr. Gyan took off for France to attend the international journalists conference and returned on June 16. Fr. Casimir came back on June 5th healthy and relaxed. He flew to Dum Dum from Bangalore and Bro. Alwyn welcomed him at the airport and traveled with him to Pratiksha. Fr. Casimir enjoyed his first air travel in the company of his former parishioners from Telco.

Though the campus was badly hit by the scourging heat of May, the continuous rain in the early June brought life to all the dying plants. The presence of Fr. Casimir brought much joy and support to all in the campus and outside as well. The new batch of 10 boys arrived on the 22nd and the classes will commence from 2nd July.

St. Anthony’s Church, Dhanbad. The new primary school at Dhowatan – ST. JOHN MARY VIANNEY was in the limelight in the district and heavy rush for admissions in the school from the 1st week of June. Fr. Edward Kongari had to pitch his tent on the spot for 3 days to clear the admission rush. Mean time the well work is completed and one classroom is prepared to function with the KG students. June 15 will be recorded as a historic day for the school at Dhowatan. On the auspicious morning at 9.00 a.m. in the presence of the parents and many guests the KG class was inaugurated by Fr. Walter Crasta, Director, DSWC . Earlier in the morning, Fr. Edward Kongari had meetings with the parents and villagers to chalk out the fee structure, text books and uniform for the children. Regular classes began from June 16 from 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. Congratulations to Fr. Edward Kongari and the Catechist, Augustine Horo for the hard work and pioneering initiative. There are 70 children  attending the classes. Meantime the classroom construction is in progress. The big well has 16 feet of water. Fr. Edward is ready to supply water even to Gomoh provided the DSWC is ready and willing to take  the challenge.

Fr. Norbert had been to his ancestral home for 2 weeks in the month of May and came back relaxed and rejuvenated.

The solemnity of the feast of St. Anthony, the Parish Day was celebrated on June 11 at 7.30 a.m. Fr. Edward Kongari, the Parish Priest presided at the Eucharist at the School Hall. After the Mass, all shared a sumptuous breakfast arranged by the Parish Council. The clergy and religious of the deanery, numbering over 45 joined the parish team for an A-1 meal at 7.00 p.m. at the presbytery.

The 62nd birthday of Fr. Edward Kongari was celebrated on June 27 with a special Mass, felicitation and meal for the clergy and religious in the evening. All the deanery members came to salute their boss on his birthday and to wish him “ad multos annos” on his birthday.

Catholic Charities, Sundernagar : Fr. Halan Bodra was given a warm welcome by the staff of CC/SJVK on May 29th. Immediately after, the staff evaluation program started and continued for 3 days. Fr. Bipin was seen in New Delhi-Hazaribagh-Ranchi for different meetings.

 

St. Mary’s English School, Bistupur : The heavy rain and storm brought down almost 60 feet long of the compound wall towards the main road on 5th afternoon. Fr. Gerry D’Souza had to get into emergency action to clear the traffic and remove the debris. Everybody is grateful to God that nobody was hurt in the sudden collapse of the compound wall. The classrooms are coming up at the junior block and hopefully the junior section will start classes back in the campus shortly.

The school bid a tearful and fond farewell to Fr. Elvius Dungdung on June 17 at 8.00 a.m.during the special assembly of middle-high school students and the teachers. On the same evening the staff representatives reached Fr. Elvius to Chaibasa Parish. The students and staff extended a very warm welcome to Fr. Gerry Martin D’Douza on the same day.

 

St. Joseph’s Dispensary, Bhilai Pahari : The medical camp held on June 4 had 83 patients. Dr. Nudshat, Sr. Elsy Cherian ,SCJM, Sr. Gracy, SCJM, Sr. Fidelis, JMJ and 6 nurse students from Jeevan Jyothi were on duty from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. together with Sr. Irene, JMJ . The poor helpless villagers found some consolation to get free treatment on the 1st Sunday of every month at our dispensary.

The construction work of the 3 garages is progressing well and the roof slab is already concreted. The pond began over flowing on 6th June and Fr. Cyprian Lobo returned on 7th midnight from his home holiday to enjoy water in all the fields and ducks, pigs, chicken, on joy race all over the campus.

St. Anthony’s Church, Maubhandar :  Fr. Ferdinand Tigga, CMF was installed Parish Priest by Fr. George Manna on June 11 during the solemn Mass. Mr. Ephrem Kispotta was the Master of Ceremony for the liturgy. The Parish Council had made elaborate preparations for the occasion. The choir rendered beautiful and devotional hymns during the Mass. Immediately after the Mass all remained in the Church for the welcome and farewell celebrations. The parishioners gave a warm welcome to their new PP and tearful-thankful farewell to Fr. Terry. The liturgy concluded at 10.15 a.m. Fr. David Vincent , Fr. Siluvimuthu, CMF and Fr. Roque Cardoza were present for the Mass and the function

 

 

St. Mark’s Parish, Toklo : Pastor, Fr. Camille experienced a miraculous moment when he noticed in reality the right front wheel of his jeep rushing out by itself much ahead of him on his drive to CKP on the 30th May. He had couple of his school teachers with him in the jeep .Nothing happened to anybody but with the help of some villagers got the wheel fixed and continued the journey.

Camille traveled to Hydrabad on June 03 to attended the seminar on “Herbal Medicine/ Plants” organized by the CBCI Health Commission. He has a doctorate certificate to treat any person willing to risk his life. Later he went to Bangalore for a check up at the Hirdayalaya of Dr. Devi Sheeti to get a clean chit for his strong heart. Fr. Herman Tigga held the port though he had a severe attack of Malaria/viral fever with diarrhea. Camille reached back at Toklo on 21st night.

 

Vidya Jyoti Centre, Siadih: Finally Pastor, Fr. Michael Jojo managed to dig a pond of 120’ long and 38’ wide with the help of a JCB machine hired from Jamshedpur. The work was delayed due to the heavy rains in between and the machine falling down into the deepened part. As a result one crane had to be rushed to rescue the JCB. The hostel children returned on June 18 and classes began on the 19th. The convent building has already reached lintel level and work is progressing in good speed.

 

St. Paul’s Parish, Maluka : The parish community gave a fond farewell to Fr. Pascal Minj on Sunday, June 11. Fr. Pascal presided at the community Mass and soon after the parishioners thanked him for his service to the community for the last 3 years. On June 16, Fr. Pascal was reached to Purulia in the company of Fr. Valerian and Srs. Lantia and Madhu.  Fr. Manu Horo was ready to extend a warm welcome to his new associate to the Santhal  Mission in Bengal Region.

 

Prabhu Marsal, Goilkera:  June 18, 2006 will be marked as a red-letter day for the people of Goilkera. On this historic day, Fr. Roque Cardoza was installed as the 3rd Parish Priest of Prabhu Marsal by Fr. Geoge Manna . Msgr. John Bodra introduced Fr. Roque to the congregation and Fr. Vijay Kachhap conducted the installation ceremony. Immediately after, there was the welcome ceremony for Fr. Roque and the Guests. All the guests were garlanded by a single parishioner and a special bouquet to Fr. Tobias to thank him for his dedicated service to the community. The choir sang a welcome song followed by a farewell one. All the Fathers spoke on the occasion and prayed for Fr. Roque and the Parish Community. Fr. Tobias had prepared a sumptuous meal for the guests and he himself traveled in their company to CKP to go to Ranchi for his migration certificate.

The 46th birthday of Fr. Roque Cardoza was celebrated on 30th June with a special Mass with the Hostel children, felicitation and agape. It was a day of celebration for the school children. Many guests from Jamshedpur and CKP reached Goilkera for lunch and share the joy of the day with Fr. Roque.

 

Bishop’s House, Golmuri : During the summer holidays the Bishop’s House campus became a mighty garage for the many vehicles – the ambulances from Divya Bharati-Kripa Sadan and Goilkera, the jeep from Toklo, the Ambassador from Adra . All the vehicles were cleared out by the middle of June.

Bishop Felix Toppo was welcomed by the community on June 30th. He reached Jamshedpur by the Gitanjali Express from Kolkata. The seminarians who were in the language classes came to the Bishop’s House before getting back to their respective seminaries. Fr. C.R. Prabhu came back from his  tour of Mangalore- Kerala  on 13th June and was forced to stay back in Jamshedpur due to the MCC bandh . He returned to St. Albert’s on 16th. The community bid a fond farewell to Fr. Joe Surin, S.J., the 1st PRO of the Diocese on 13th June and extended a hearty welcome to Fr. Vijay Kachhap, S.J. The Tertianship dates too got extended due to the MCC bandh and Joe Surin ,James (Poona) and Kosga were driven safely to Hazaribagh and presented to the masters, Fr. Joe Njara and Fr. R.C. Chako by Fr. Vijay Kachhap on 16th morning. Msgr. John Bodra indeed gave the preparatory instruction after the supper on 13th to the candidates in view of the late starting.

Fr. Vijay got in to quick action with the various youth programs at Siadih, Purulia and Chaibasa . He guided the diocesan regents (Nestor, Jilson, Sonu & Pascal) for their recollection on the 24th-25th.at the Bishop’s House. Fr. David got too busy with our  auditors and traveled to Chaibasa-Dhnbad-Purulia to complete the job on time to present for assessing.

Fr. Robert Toppo started the physiotherapy with Dr. Gupta at Bistupur from June 19 while taking rest at the Bishop’s House. He will have to continue for 3 weeks to get the expected 80% recovery from the facial paralysis attack at Kummardhubi on May 30th. Bros. Raju Crasta and S. Stephen were at work in the Bishop’s House during their extended holiday.


St. Xavier’s School, Purulia : The month of June saw  two unique and memorable events in the school  as well as in the Catholic Ashram. On 12th June, the  introduction of  Class XI of ISC-12 was inaugurated officially  by Fr George Mannarakarn, the Vicar General  who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest  in the library before  the  august gathering of  Fathers, Sisters, the teachers, new students with their parents First, Principal  Hilary officially announced  the grant of permanent  affiliation and permission to introduce  classes XI and XII by the Council. Fr Henry said the prayer asking God’s abundant blessings on our new staff and students of Plus Two while Fr Edward Saldanha enumerated with appreciation and gratitude the contributions made by different people  for this landmark achievement and exhorted the new Class XI to work hard to realize their dream, and maintain the high morale and discipline in the school. Fr George exhorted  the staff and students to work hard for the betterment of the school. The Other distinguished guests were Fathers Emmanuel Horo, Vijay Kachap and  Junas Bhengra. So far we have admitted 33 students in Class XI including a catholic girl from our parish
On 18th June, the parish celebrated the Sacerdotal Jubilee of  our triune friends Fr Henry Sequeira, Fr Pascal Minj and Fr Emmanuel Horo  with a  beautiful  and meaningful concelebrated  Holy Mass. Fr Manu welcomed the new incumbents, Fr Pascal  and Br Bipin Barla,  the regent to the Catholic  Ashram  and thanked Br Sonu Hansda for his hard work  esp in the Boys Hostel . Fr Henry who was the main celebrant gave a very inspiring homily highlighting the importance of the Sacred Priesthood and the Eucharist on the occasion of the feast of Corpus Christi. Soon after the mass there was a grand “Swagat” for the jubilarins by the parishioners. Five of our teachers returned to the school after completing their modular in service training from the Council in Kolkata.
Five of our senior students who have undergone Computer Hardware Course  at the District Science Centre have been awarded with  an ‘A grade ‘ certificates.

Loyola Jesuit Community, Jamshedpur : The Golden Jubilee in Religious Life of  Fr. George Thana, S.J., Fr. Edward D’Souza, S.J. , Bro. Oscar Rodericks, S.J. and the Silver Jubilee of Priesthood of Frs. Pascal Minj, Henry Sequeira, Emmanuel Horo, and Fr. Vincent Pascal, OFM were celebrated on June 22nd with a solemn Mass at the Loyola Hall presided over by Fr. George Thana. Fr. James Kalapura, S.J., the Jesuit Provincial gave an elaborate life introduction of all the jubilarians. Fr. George Thana gave a fitting introduction to the Mass theme. Fr. Eddie D’Souza gave an emotional and thoughtful homily. Fr. Manu Horo while introducing the intercessory prayers enumerated his mission in Chandil and how he was caught off hand by the MCC and the unfriendly mob at different occasions. All the Jubilarians were in their elements and offered their best for the meaningful celebration of the Jubilee Mass. Immediately after the Holy Eucharist, all assembled at the community dinning hall for the cutting of the jubilee cake and the sumptuous family meal prepared by Bro. Maxi and team. Bro. Wency led the Choir for the Mass. This jubilee celebration had the maximum number of clergy and religious representing the different areas of the province and diocese.

 

 

Ashirvad, Sankosai : On Saturday, 17th June, 22 candidates of SCJM were accepted for aspirantship during the Holy Eucharist presided over by Fr. George Manna in the new convent Hall. The celebrants, Sisters and candidates were welcomed by the dancing troupe. Sr. Roshni, Barla, SCJM, the Provincial Superior called out the names of the candidates for acceptance. Soon after the Mass all assembled at the dinning hall and felicitated the new 22 aspirants and shared the family meal in jubilation and celebration.

 

Divya Bharati, Chaibasa: The centre is on renovation mode- the moth eaten doors, windows and broken asbestos sheets  are replaced . Fr. Corne took a trip to Bangalore for the ICYM National level Meeting in mid June.

Fr. Fabian conducted Eneagram course for the Novices at Mango and retreats for the Daughters of St. Anne’s in Lohardanga and at Upasana. Divya Bharati will be conducting the following programmes in July (1) Mahila Sangh Evaluation Meeting for Kolhan-Porhat Deanery (2/7)  at Divya Bharati  and (2) Catechists Seminar at Charbandia Parish (6-9/7) . Christian colleges lead in the survey of best colleges in India : Christian Colleges are leading in a recently held survey of best colleges in India. The survey has been conducted by India Today AC-Nielsen-Org-marg and the results published in the latest issue of India Today. St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai tops in the list of best colleges in Arts and Commerce section. Loyola College, Chennai  tops in the Science stream and St. Xavier’s Mumbai  follows closely at no. 2. UGC announces list of fake varsities:  “The University Grants Commission has declared as fake more than 20 universities and educational institutions across eight states and warned students against taking admission in those places…. Uttar Pradesh had the dubious distinction of topping the list with as many as 10 fake universities operating in the state followed by Delhi which ran six such institutions. Mahila Gram Vidyapith and Vishwavidyalaya, Varnasi Sanskrit Viswavidyalay, Indian Exuction  council of UP and Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith figure among the unrecognized universities of UP, Kumar said. Delhi Bioinformatics Institute of India and St. John’s University were among those operating without recognition in Delhi. The list also included maithili University and Viswavidyalalaya from Bihar, Krishanattam in Kerala, Raja Arabic University in Maharashtra, Kesarani Vidyapeeth in Madhya Pradesh, Sanskrit University in Tamil Nadu, Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society and Handwriting University India in Karnataka” (timesofindia.com 02.06.06)

 

Kids born to SC/ST mothers to get quota benefit: “ The Social Justice and Empoerment ministry wants to grant the status of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes to children who have a non-SC/ST father but a mother who belongs to SC/ST category. At present, the father’s caste determines the caste of the children since Indian society is largely patriarchal. Confirming the move, a senior ministry official said “A Proposal to this effect will be placed before the Cabinet for approval shortly”.( Times of India 04.06.06)
