That glorious Form, that Light unsufferable,

And that far-beaming blaze of Majesty

Wherewith He wont at Heaven’s high council-table

To sit the midst of Trinal unity,

He laid aside; and here with us to be,

Forsook the courts of everlasting day

And chose with us a darksome house of mortal clay.

[John Milton]

“ We begin the Christmas vacation on the 21st of December and re-opening is on 4th January, 2004. The first semester exams begin mid-January. We have the Indian Community Christmas gathering on the 13th of December”.  [John Crasta, Leuven]

Christian Marriage Registrar :  Mr. J.J.V Fernandes has been appointed by the Government of Karnataka by its order No. OSE 126 PMS 2003 dated on 29-8-2003 as Registrar of Marriages for Dakshina Disrtrict under the Indian Christian Marriage Act 1872.Though Church marriages are generally recognized by one and all, it has become necessary to register the Church marriages by the Registrar of Marriages under the Indian Christian  Act, since the passport authorities/consulates who issue visas to go over to foreign countries are now insisting for a marriage certificate from the Registrar of Marriages, under the above act. The Registrar is also empowered to solemnize marriage ‘between persons, one or both of whom is or are a Christian  or Christians” and issue a certificate of marriage. In other words even if one is a Christian and the other is of a different faith, such marriage between that couple can also be solemnized by the Registrar and a marriage certificate could be issued according to the act.[Examiner no.45]

Half of all people are under the age of 25 : UN Report : “ The largest generation of adolescents in history – 1.2 billion – is preparing to enter adulthood, according to The State of World Population 2003 report, which says that nearly half of all people are under the age of 25- the largest youth generation in history “.

“ The report examines the challenges and risks faced by this generation that impact directly on their physical, emotional and mental well-being. It says millions of adolescents and young people are faced with the prospects of early marriage and childbearing, incomplete education, and the threat of HIV/AIDS. Half of all new HIV infections occur in people aged 15-24..” [www.rediff.com, 10.10.03]

Forget dowry if you want govt job in Bihar : “ The Rabri Devi government has made it mandatory for its male employees who get married to give a declaration writing that they did not take dowry. But, self-declaration alone will not do. The statement has to be signed not only by the spouse but also  father-in-laws of the candidate…Government employees are in great demand in Bihar’s marriage bazaar, where even a lower division clerk demands more than 5 lakh in cash and other “essentials” as dowry”.

Heart risks for every tenth Indian by 2010 : “By 2010 , every tenth Indian will have some kind of a heart problem, experts predict and point to pollution as a major factor contributing to such a gloomy scenario.’ The fine particulates of pollution enter the blood and go through the lungs unchecked. They finally deposit in the arteries causing inflammation’, Dr. Upendra Kaul, noted Cardiologist and former president of the Cardiological  Society of India, say. The reason for the disquieting projection is the fast pace of urbanization in India “. [ Times of India, 01.11.03]

Beware- ‘Sugar Free’ could be just as harmful :  “ If you are a diabetic tempted by the ‘sugar free’ label on a jar of jam or a box of mithais, be warned : you are about to consume sugar. Sugar of the kind that doesn’t raise blood sugar levels immediately but eventually has the effect as table sugar. The ‘for diabetics’ label on packaged product is misleading as the manufacturers base their sugar-less claim on the fact that they use fructose, and not sucrose, as sweetener, says Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Senior endocrinologist, Apollo Hospital”. Mother of Millions :

OH ! Hail, Hail Mother Teresa

Thou art the Mother of millions

And thy name is Holy

And thy heart is pure and blessed.

Thou art the gift of the Almighty

To the poor and the suffering humanity.

And thou hath wiped the tears of millions

Of destitutes , handicapped and orphans.

Thou wanted to quench, the thirst of Christ

And dedicated your life to the sick, dying and unwanted

Like an angel dressed in white sari with blue trim

Render free service to the poor and the needy.

Thy mission spread the message of Christian love,

To work for the poor.

We pray and pledge to carry on thy work,

Thy love and service will guide us to follow they work

OH ! Hail, Hail Mother Teresa

Temporary employee entitled to pension :  A Temporary employee who retires on attaining super-annuation  will be entitled to retiring super-annuation pension and death-cum retirement gratuity on the scale as admissible to a permanent employee declared the Punjab and Haryana High Court”  . {Hindustan Times, 04.11.03]

Teetotalling totalitarians : “ There was an articles on European dictators – Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin – written by Charles W. Ferguson in Harper’s Magazine in 1937. His theme was that dictators are dangerous to humanity because they don’t drink. Hitler was  a vegetarian , teetotaler and did not smile. Mussolini ate pasta like horses eat hay but rarely touched wine. Stalin lived a hermit’s life in a small three-room apartment, dressed simply, ate bland food and occasionally took a sip of brandy “.

“ The point Ferguson made was that people who are habitual drinkers sometimes get drunk, and make asses of themselves. Dictators can’t afford to make asses  of themselves; if they did, people would not take them seriously. Ferguson concluded : “Do they indicate that we are today in the grip of a coterie of men essentially smug, disastrously self-righteous, grimly aware of their tremendous rectitude and hence so dangerous that the world at large would be better off if it could entice them on a roaring drink ? No man could be a dangerous dictator with a hangover”.

“ Our own mini-dictator, Bal Tahackeray, enjoys beer [he offered me some the one time I called on him]. Indira Gandhi did not drink; she had dictatorial ambitions. Her son, Sanjay, never touched alcohol or even tea., coffee or fizzy soft drinks: if he had lived, he would have certainly imposed dictatorship on the country. Atal Bihari Vajpayee likes his drink and is tolerant about most things. L.K. Advani does not drink or smoke, and doesn’t have the glad eye for women: I regard him as dangerous…”

“ More than guarding ourselves against puritans and teetotalers we need to keep a watchful eye on people drunk with power: power goes to the head much faster than alcohol. People in power forget to mind their own business and want to impose their views on others because they feel superior and think they know what is good and what is bad for others .No sooner than a man or woman becomes a minister, he or she starts pontificating : they become mini-mullahs pronouncing fatwas from their mosques [ministers’ rooms], they abolish English, study astrology, don’t listen to pop music, don’t smoke, don’t drink etc. One may well tell them to their faces , “Don’t sermonize, have a drink”. { Hindustan Times – 11.10. 2003]

Kerala parish installs ‘world’s tallest oil lamp”  A catholic parish in  the southern  Indian state of Kerala has installed what it claims is the world’s largest oil lamp. The 7.82 meter lamp weighing about 6000 kgs was installed on 19th October in the compound of  Holy Family Parish in Koothattukulam, Palai diocese. Parish Priest Father George Vellooparambil says the lamp is the “tallest in the world” as well as “the finest example of India’s religious unity”.

Lighting oil lamps is an integral part of Hindu temple worship, but for centuries, Christians in India have also used lamps in their churches. The installation coincided with the beatification of Mother Teresa of Kolkata, to whom it is dedicated. Father Vellooparambil said on 20th October that the dedication of the lamp to the much-loved nun “can spread secularism and religious harmony in India”. [UNCAN]
