Politics cannot be above the law : “ Is violence a valid tool in the pursuit of ideology ? This
question has resurfaced with the Rae Bareli court deciding to frame charges
against some BJP leaders. The BJP’s position is that the Ayodhya movement being
essentially political, it must be treated in a different class from the crimes
committed for personal gain. In other words, whereas a Mayawati must go to jail
for plundering the environment around the Taj Mahal, those who allowed the
desecration of the Babri masjid must be set free because the latter were
pursuing a legitimate political course. This is absurd. What happened in
Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 was in many ways worse than the awful things that
Mayawati was planning to do to the Taj”. [Times of India, 22.9.03].
240 Pota cases, all against minorities : “ Although Gujarat still faces some competition when compared to
the huge list of accused booked under Pota in states like Jharkhand and Tamil
Nadu, it might perhaps be the only state where all the 240 – odd persons booked
under Pota are from the minority community”.
“The only non-Muslim in the list is a Sikh,
Liversingh Tej Singh Sikligar, who figured in it for an attempt on the life of
Surat lawyer Hasmukh Lalwala, and allegedly hung himself in a police lock-up in
Surat in April”. [Times of India, 15.09.03]
Underground Priest arrested in Hong Kong : An underground Catholic Priest in northern China’s Hebel province
has been arrested for holding summer catechism class, according to Church
sources. The arrest comes close on the heels of news that Bishop Julius Jia
Zhiguo of Zhengding, also Hebel province, has been released after being held
for three months.
On 9 August, public security officials took Fr. Chi
Huitian of Baoding diocese , Hebei, and two lay Catholics from Lijiatong
village in Zhao country. Fr. Chi was celebrating Mass for the students of
summer catechism class when he was arrested. Sources say that the catechism
classes have been disrupted for two years and that this was the third time the
same priest has been taken away. The two lay Catholics were released the same
day, the sources added, but Fr. Chi was detained in nearby Ningjin country for
“seriously disturbing social order”. He reportedly has not been allowed to see
anyone and there has been no news about him since then, the sources said. [ucan]

Women constable’s presence not mandatory to arrest
women - : The
Supreme Court has ruled out that it was not mandatory for the police to keep a
lady constable present while arresting a woman at any time of the day or night
if they felt that securing the presence of a lady constable would delay the process of law ”. [PTI.
17.10.03]
Huge Tribal presence among ‘Rambhakts’ baffles police : “The participation of tribals from various states in the VHP movement in Ayodhya has baffled UP police officers. During the raids at Karsevakpuram in Ayodhya on October 15, the police were surprised to see tribals in saffron robes with trishuls in their hands. Tribals were also a major phenomenon during the communal riots in Gujarat last year…. Sources said the tribals were from MP, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and North-East…. Aware of the poor turnout from the cow-belt areas, the VHP had this time concentrated on tribals through the RSS-controlled Vanvasi Ashrams. Spread over tribal regions in various states, these ashrams were set up to counter Christian missionaries”. [ Hindustan Times, 17.10.03]
