JAMSHEDPUR DIOCESE

Vol. XXXIII No. 7

JAMSHEDPUR, INDIA

JULY 2003

Jesus, I my cross have taken,

All to leave and follow Thee;

Destitute, despised, forsaken,

Thou, from hence, my all must be:

Perish every fond ambition,

All I’ve sought and hoped and known;

Yet how rich is my condition,

God and Heav’n are still my own !

St. Vincent’s Ashram, Adra : We some times hear this slogan repeated : "O the Youth, they talk a lot but do nothing ". Not so with the two of the youth of Sacred Heart Church, Adra. Patrical Paul and Fabian Furtardo, sprung a delightful surprise on the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent’s Ashram , Adra, on 6th June .The love and compassion in their hearts for the poor and their less favoured brothers and sisters, moved them to prepare a charity box out of a shoe box. They wrote on the top of it " Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming of it ". They then sealed the box, cut a clit on it and went from door to door of the houses of our parishioners first and then to their non Christian neighbours and friends, requesting them to contribute any amount they could afford for the homeless old ladies of the Home for the Aged of St. Vincent’s Ashram.

It is amazing how much those two young people could do in just three days. In their diary they wrote down the names of each donor and the amount they gave. The donors were invited to place their contribution in the sealed box with their own hands. On presenting their efforts to the surprised Sisters on the 6th evening, the box was opened and what a shock every one had to find that the contents counted up to Rs. 1361.00. The Sisters couldn’t believe their eyes. It seems that the Lord too was pleased with this social work, for he sent down his blessings on the two, in a short and beautiful shower of rain .Fr. Edward Saldhana was given a very warm welcome by the Parishioners on 15th June and by the School Staff and Students on 19th June. On 28th night Fr. Goa Archdiocese appoints panel to study ‘picture weeping’ Christ: Goa Archdiocese has begun investigating a "weeping" portrait of Christ with the help of two atheists and Hindu, but says it will not investigate an alleged Marian apparition. The two phenomena were reported during February and March in Goa state.

Auxiliary Bishop Filipe Neri heads the 10-menber investigation committee appointed 4 May that includes two Episcopal vicars. Among other committee members are two atheists, a Hindu and the director of the national Institute of Oceanography. The incident involving a Sacred Heart of Jesus portrait that allegedly wept tears of blood occurred the night of 26 February in a Catholic family’s house in Camurlim.

Church authorities later removed the portrait, which measures 30 centimeters by 30 centimeters, and kept it at an undisclosed location. [UCAN]

Water therapy : You must drink plenty of water. Just after half an hour of taking breakfast, don’t forget to drink a glass of water. Since most of us eat a little more for lunch or dinner, we need to take a glass of water every half an hour or so after each meal, twice or thrice. You may drink more if you feel thirsty. The idea is to produce about two litres of urine in about 24 hours. That would keep your kidney flushed to avoid formation of kidney stones, hyperacidity, flatulence, constipation and so on. Taking water would also help detoxify the body by eliminating toxins. The fibre in fruits and that in salads, etc acts like a broom to keep your intestines clean. That way, you can avoid constipation, cancer of the colon, varicose veins, unexplained odema of the legs and other ailments.

[Dr. H.K. Bakhru, Health Action –June ]

Holiness is …

" Holiness is not something that comes from doing good : we do good because we are holy. Holiness is not something we acquire by avoiding evil : we avoid evil because we are holy. Holiness is not something that flows from prayer : we pray because we are holy.

Holiness is not the result of kindness: we are kind because we are holy. Holiness is not something that blossoms when we are courageous: we are courageous because we are holy. Holiness is not a gift we obtain after a life-time of service: we give service because we are holy. Our holiness is : GOD-WITH-US,EMMANUEL. And while it is true that Holiness carries with it the Cross and Resurrection, it is more "a gift" than a reward ! ".[John Catoir]

Are Christians on endless ‘surveillance’ in Gujarat ? :

" In total disregard of the Gujarat High Court’s orders, the Patan district police have launched yet another ‘survey’ of the Christians and the institutions run by the community even as the State authorities denied issuing any such instruction…."

"The police party landed at the Catholic Ashram past midnight on Saturday and woke up 69 year old Father Munnu, a freedom fighter and Ashram in-charge. Police , however, returned empty –handed when Father Munnu questioned the advisability of making inquiries in the dead of the night since there was no specific complaints against him. But police, this time in civilian dress, returned to the Ashram again the next day morning to record details of the inmates in the Ashram, its activities, source of income and such other issues. Police also visited the houses of some 10 Christian families in the village asking them why they kept photographs of Jesus Christ., why and when they embraced Christianity and some ‘inside information’ about the Ashram. Later, the police party also went to the ‘Daughters of the Cross’, a branch of the Daughters of the Cross Education and Medical Society, Anand, and questioned Sister Jyoti and two other nuns there. Later , a similar survey of the Christian houses was carried out in the neighbouring Tankvas, Khalipur and Odhava villages".

"Not only are police virtually acting as the census officers enumerating the Christian families, they have also been asking the converts why and when they have embraced Christianity and the ‘source of income’ of the Christian institutions undertaking welfare schemes such as digging bore-wells in scarcity-hit villages… The ‘survey’ from time to time had become a major irritant for the Christians in the State".
