I find that my struggle with self-identity parallels my struggle to free
my voice in singing. As a singer I try to circumvent my inhibitions and
fears (such as speaking in front of large groups) in order to become better
vocally and to find my true voice. It is through my music that my struggle
with self-identity manifests itself physically. In Middle C-print I have
used the technique of stamping to indicate the barriers one must go through
to find the true self. Middle C is rotated and reads not as a music note but
can be seen as other symbols. In Upward Movement No.2 the barrier is
broken. However, instead of just being a layer, elements of the barrier are
now incorporated into the painting. The two works may seem abstract, but
they were created in a very deliberate manner. The layers are used not only
to create depth but also indicate the complexity of each piece.
