| Parents often try to shield their children from violence, sex, profanity, and drugs. Television parental guidelines and movie ratings help parents filter what their child watches. Books from authors such as Judy Blume, Mark Twain, and Madeleine LEngle are frequently challenged and sometimes banned from libraries. But, what effect does this have on children? Recalling my childhood, I am re-examining my perception of the world then and now, the knowledge gap, and what factors help or hinder. By giving children a censored view of the world, they are not exposed to challenging and engaging ideas. Not giving these children knowledge hinders intellectual and creative development. |
