BIRTH: Have seen secondary sources that give birthplace as Bonneville, KY, there is not a Bonneville in Kentucky, there is a Bonnieville in Hart Co., KY.  In the 1880 census, Minnie is living with her parents in Munfordville, Hart Co., KY, so I presume that Bonnieville is the correct birthplace.

the name of the street is illegible on the 1930 census (the first letter, "H", is the only legible part), but Minnie's daughter Imogene moved to 43 Henricks St. in 1952 so I am assuming that Minnie also lived on Henricks St. in 1930.

Alfred married Elizabeth (Hall?) in 1875, and she died in 1879.  I do not have an exact birthdate for Caddie and have found her listed as Harriet's daughter, not Elizabeth's, in two different family trees.  I still believe she may be Elizabeth's daughter, though.  If she is Elizabeth's daughter, I believe Harriet and Elizabeth may be sisters so the ancestral info would be the same.  I am still looking for proof and the answer's to these questions, though.

Bill: Christopher Reiff/Rieff was born circa 1753 in Pennsylvania, and married Mary Wilschannah about 1770. He may be the patriarch of the family you are researching. The History of Northwest Arkansas, published by Goodspeed, 1889, pages 1010 and 1011, of the Washington County Section, has this to say about Christopher and Mary: “Christopher Rieff was born in Pennsylvania, in which State he was living during the Revolutionary War. He settled in Wilson County, Tenn., about 1800, and reared to maturity a family of twelve children. He was a very active and energetic man until about middle age, then he had a stroke of Paralysis, which left him helpless the remainder of his days. He died in 1824 at the age of 70 years. His wife was born in Lancaster County, Penn., and died in Tenn. in 1830 in her 80th year.” My book “Reiff to Riffe Family in America,” found in many state libraries, has a great deal more information about his descendants.

MARTHA PITKIN

She followed her brother William to America in 1661, to

return with him to England, 'not once supposing he intended

to remain in the wilderness,' as she expressed it. Her first

greeting on meeting her brother, whom she found feeding

his swine, was, 'I left a brother in England serving his king,

and find another in America serving his swine.'

Martha Pitkin was a lady endowed with more than ordinary

talent, improved by an excellent education. The reception

she met with in the colony was most flattering; her comely

form and accomplished manner making the colonists

anxious to retain her in their country. In the words of the

Rev. Thomas Robbins, for many years the pastor of the

church she attended, 'this girl put the colony in commotion.

If possible she must be detained. The stock was too

valuable to be parted with. It became a matter of general

consultation what young man was good enough for Miss

Pitkin.' Tradition says that so many young men wished to

marry the accomplished beauty, that they cast lots for her

hand, but fails to say what part Miss Pitkin was to take in

the affair. The facts are, that the sons of Henry Wolcott, one

of the first settlers of East Windsor, were well pleased with

Miss Pitkin, and to avoid all question of strife or jealousy,

it is believed it was decided by lot among themselves

which one should sue for her hand. The lot fell to Simon

Wolcott, the youngest son; at all events, he pressed his suit,

and was successful. Her brother favored the match, and she

became the wife of Simon Wolcott, and subsequently the

mother of Governor Roger Wolcott, grandmother of

Governor Oliver Wolcott, and great-grandmother of the

second Governor Oliver Wolcott, and of Governor Roger

Griswold.  Governor Ellsworth was also a lineal descendant, and               her granddaughter married Governor Matthew Griswold.

It was stated in the funeral sermon of Governor Roger

Wolcott, her ninth child, that 'he never went to school, but

was educated by his mother in her own dwelling'(+)

8620.       Henry WOLCOTT Sr. was born 5 Dec 1578 in Lydiard, St. Lawrence, Somersetshire, England. He died 30 May 1655 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut and was buried in First Congregational Church, Windsor, Hartford Co., Connecticut. Henry married Elizabeth SAUNDERS on 19 Jan 1606 in Lydiard, St. Lawrence Parish, Somersetshire, England.

BIOGRAPHY: Henry was the emigrant to Windsor, Conn. As the second son of John Wolcott, of Galdon Manor, Tolland, Co. Somerset, Eng., he held a fair position among the landed gentry, and an estate which placed him in affluent circumstances. By the decease of his elder brother Christopher, intestate, 1639, the family estate, including the manor-house, mill,. etc., also came into his possession after his removal to America.

BIOGRAPHY: The earlier portion of his life was passed in the quiet pursuit of a country squire's dsuties and responsibilities; but, becoming converted under the teaching of the Rev. John Elton, he soon found himself closely identified with the Puritan party in the religious and political revolution which then convulsed England. American presented to him, as to hundreds of others like-minded, the only asylum where civil and religious freedom could be fouind; and, though then past 52 years of age, and with children of an age when they most needed the social and educational advantages afforded in their native land, --to emigrate to a new home beyond the occean. Taking their three sons, and leaving behind them for a time two daughters ands their youngest son (age 5), they joined the Warham and Maverick emigration of 1630, on the 19th of October in which yr. we find Henry Wolcott's name as one of the first list of freemen of Boston.

BIOGRAPHY: He rem. from Dorchester to Windsor in 1635; in 1637 was elected a member of the lower house of the first General Assembly of Conn.; in 1640 stnads first in a list of the inhabitants of Windsor; in 1643 was elected to the House of Magistrates (the present Senate) of Conn., and was annually re-elected during life, and was probably, after the pastor, the most distinguished citizen of Windsor; the younger child who had been left behind, rejoined the family between 1631 and 1641. His estate was inventoried at L764, 8s, 10d, not a large sum for one who is known to have sold about L8,000 worth of estate in England preparatory to removing to America. In the Ancient "Family Chronologie" it is recorded of Henry Wolcott and his wife, that "these both dyed in hope and Ly guried under one Tomb in Windsor."

17243.     Anne BLAKE.

17244.     William PITKIN was born 1580 in Berkhamstead, Hertsfordshire, England. He died Jan 1644/1645 and was buried in St. Peter's Church, Berkhamstead, Hertsfordshire, England. William married Jane MASON about 1606.

Here is a distillation of the (several pages) article by James Pitkin, 3 Cranwell Ave., Carterton, Oxfordshire OX18 3SB, England - who sent all of the Pitkin material.  He is the Pitkin person for the Society of One Name, headquartered it seems in GB.

William Pitkin b 1580 Berkhamsted, Bucks, England, d Jan 1644/45, there, m Jane (Mason, White?) who was buried 8 Apr 1628 there, ( parents of 12 children, including William Pitkin, b 1608, there, d 1643 in London, Greater London, England, m abt 1634, Elizabeth.  All our ancestors.  None came to America.  William and Martha in the next generation were my ancestors who immigrated to CT.)

William was churchwarden of St. Peters, in Berkhamsted aft 1610.  He was a Justice of the Peace, Member of Parliament, Agent for the Duchy of Cornwall (belonging to the King) in Berkhamsted abt 1612.  This was the beginning of enclosures in Berkhamsted, in which he was involved with the Duchy lands.  He was duputed to select 30 acres 'lying west upon the former inclosed grounds (Colharbour Farm), north uppon a highway leading from the great heath towards Aldbury, east uppon the open Frith (Commons) and south uppon the old fence of the Parke,' for the purpose.   Receipt in the accounts to the vestry includes 3/4d from him for the burial of his son George, in the church.  Electd Sidesman in 1612 and signed the vestry proceedings that year, presented on 9 Apr 1613 in which he contributes another 3/4 d for his child Martha's grave.  The Prince of Wales visited Berkhamsted in 1616 to be greeted by an oration by a student at Berkhamsted Grammar School.  In 1613 a levy for repairs to the Church reveals that William's rae was the 6th highest in the Parish based on holding 23 acres arable, 2.5 acres meadow, and other wealth.  One of the first 'Gentlemen' of 12 new Capital Burgesses when King James I granted the town a new Charter on 18 Jul 1618.  He signed and approved the Vestry accounts for repair of the bell on 22 Oct 1620.  Elected Churchwarden on 26 Apr 1622.  In 1622 he was storing or marketing produce in the lofts in the market house.   In 1622 he was assessed on a holding of 39 acres.   In 1625 he paid 6/8 d for Mrs. Mason's grave (mother in law?)  Baliff ( = Mayor0 in 1625. Called Mr. Pitkin after 1627. In 1625 more enclosure was called for by Charles I in order to raise money, even though no more division had been promised by the King's father.  Behind the scenes bargaining was made with Berkhamsted for loss of grazing on 400 acres, for 100 acres for the town's poor.  Fences were raised, probably under William's order, and torn down by North church farmers on an Aug 1640 night.  They prevailed and it wasn't for another 220 years that Lord Brownlow who owned the Duchy rights enclosed the same 400 acres.  This enclosure also did not prevail, however.   Paid 6/8 d for his wife Jane's grave in Apr 1628; she had died in childbirth (with daughter Jane).  Chief Burgess in 1628.  Responsible for helping to distribute timber to the poor from a gift of the King.  He had a corne loft over the market house on 1 Apr 1630.  He signed minutes of Vestry meetings in 1631 where problems about Church dissention and other activities were noted.  In 1632 he was assessed on 196 acres, the second largest in the parish.  Took office as an Overseer of the Poor in 1633 and he sold the Churchwardens some timber, that year.  He was assessed for Church repairs in 1634/35.  Bailiff ( = mayor), Justice of the Peace, and Member of Parliament in 1636.  Headmaster of Berkhamsted Grammar School 8 Aug 1636.  Approved the bonds for the Rector's stock of the poor in Dec 1637.  He had reciepts from his cornloft, from the gaol, and for bricks in 1637.  Elected Overseer of the Poor in 1642.  Left impressive legacies to his children and grandchildren when he died two years later.

Held offices: Churchwarden, Burgess, Bailiff, Justice of the Peace, Member of Parliment and Agent for the Duchy of Cornwall in Berkhamsted. He left handsome legacies to his surviving children and grandchildren. Jane: Epithet "That worthy woman." She died in childbirth. In 1625, William Pitkin pd for "Mrs. Mason's grave". this may give clue for Jane's maiden name. There is a record that a William Pitkin married Jane White on 4 Mar 1606 at St. Gregory by St. Pauls, London.

17245.     Jane MASON was born about 1584 in England. She died Apr 1628 in Berkhamstead, Hertsfordshire, England from childbirth and was buried 8 Apr 1628 in St. Peter's Church, Berkhamstead, Hertsfordshire, England.
