| Space use public transport and cars
Public transport needs a very high population compactness to function well. Car traffic, on the other hand, needs a very low population compactness to function well. As a result an enormous sprawl have taken place, in the past 50 years, and still continues. What will bring the guideway cab? Which guideway cab impact will be on the use of land space? These impects will stipulate the land use as guideway cab trffic becomes normal. Therefor we will first look to these impects. Small nuisance: The nuisance of caudeway traffic is low compared with other motorised traffic. So, the noise zones along roads is so much smaller. As a result, areas along guideways can be better exploited for a lot of land use functions, from houses to nature. The guideways, on pilers, does not form a barier for people, animals and plants. The city completed with guideways becomes more attractive for to live in, for working, for recreation and to move into. |
| Small requirement of space:
A 2x3 Car high way requires a strip of asphalt which is about 14 meters wide each drection. And the altitude is about 5 meters, needed for trucks and overhead lamps. In this imaginairy tunnel will fits 10 to 14 guideways each direction. And the capacity for each guideway is even higher than highways. (dependent on type of guideway). This capacity is this way large that guideway cabs will function also very well at the centres of high density cities. - Parking cars costs a lot of space. Storing guideway cabs is very efficient and costs little space. This will release new free space available. Storing of own guideway cars can happen in special automatic "car parks". These "car parks" are located outside shopping and office centres. That makes that high priced land can be used very efficiently. Consequence: more possibilities: these impects of guideway cab traffic a densification of centres is possible. This means: at more places (both large and small) with a higer population compactness is possible a higher quality of the environment , thanks to guideway traffic. |
| to be near these stations is attractive:
It is attractive to live near to one of the many guideway stations. Because one has very good travel possibilities and almost no nuisance. Houses shall be built (probably) near around a station. Between stations space remains for gardens, parks, green and pathes for pedestrians, skates and bicycles. It is attractive to have a little guideway station inside your company. Not only for employees can reach there work easely, but also visitors, customers, post and movement of goods. |
| Also less attractive impact is possible:
The law of conservation of travel times and numbers of of displacements (BReVer) tells us that people are traveling approximately 430 hours in one year. As the travel speeds will increase by faster guideway cabs, the traveled distances will also become larger. This means that the average lives - work distance will increase and stimulate sprawl and promote more dispersed travel aims. Especially dual mode vehicles will cause this, because they can drive also on small silent agriculture roads, far from the quideways! Visual intrusion: At the most designs of guideways is assumed a guideway at about 5meters altitude. The guideway isnt a barrier for most other traffic. But on the other hand a new problem occurs: visual intrusion. Refer to a link to a Swedish study over visual intrusion. Important was that the guideways have to be well fitted in the suroundings; guideway who are small and unblending. And may be are fitted somewhere in small tunnels or through buildings. |

| Conclusion:
All this impacts takes place at the same time, just apart from all kinds of statutory provisions and regulations. It not clear what the guideway cab promotes most: further sprawl or more compact urbanisation. Which one will take place will depend upon the redesign of cities and plans for new cities. So governments, project lanners, traffic specialists and city builders will influence the spatial impect of guideway traffic. It seems a very interesting task to me! |
