Travelling | On the volleyball court... | Being a first aider... |

Travelling I really enjoy planning for my own trips and travelling around with my friends. Rather than joining a tour group, I've found it more relaxing and "beneficial" (in terms of learning about the specialities of the place) to plan my trip and giving myself a sufficient time to look around. Experiencing my destination as a local is my goal for travelling. My favourite countries so far are Switzerland and Japan. Both countries have a lot of nature attractions and are beautiful all year round. Places are clean, people are sincere and food is delicious. I didn't really get to know Switzerland as well as Japan, so in the future, I really hope to go back there again. Also thanks to my Co-op opportunities, I was also able to travel quite a bit when I was working in Germany and Japan. Here are some of the pictures that I took on my recent trips. Enjoy!! On the volleyball court.... Working as a volleyball referee has been one of my extracurricular activities since high school. Back then, I just wanted to do something after school, for fun! But then I carry on being a referee, because it is actually a good way to train for personal skills (e.g. soft skills). I've got to admit that it's not as easy as it seems -- having coaches jumping on you, bearing the "bad" words from the players (can't really give them a card after the game, huh?), and helping out other officials. It's all about management skill, I guess. To keep all the procedural things of a game in order, making the game runs smoothly and fairly. Yet do not draw the audience's attention away from the players. Once told by a senior official, "The best official is one that is not noticed." :) Anyway, being a referee is still something that I enjoy doing very much. It's a great way to meet people from different backgrounds. And hey, what can you say, you can always get a great view of the game! Being a first aider... Another thing that I've carried on since my high school era. I am involved in the St. John Ambulance Brigade (Div. 59c) since 1998. Throughout all these years, I went through the stage of being a crusader member to now being the Divisional Administrative Officer (e.g. the "dedicated paper work person"). In the past two years, I have also been assigned to work for the juniors program (age 6 -10) with other youth leaders, Priscilla and Lloyd. ;) Now let me tell you a bit more on what we do: Other than working as first aiders in community events, youth members in the division also join various competitions through out the year. During meeting time, we also practice our first aid skills via scenario training and have additional modules such as radio communications and home health care. If you want more information, please visit our divisional website at www.59c.info The experience of working in a youth brigade division is quite phenomenal, because the age range in a division is quite big (from 6 to adult), you have to learn how to communicate well with people in all ages and also try to brainstorm methods to make learning first aid fun for all. :) Copyright © 2005 Jeanette Tsang.
