» 2004 All-TFFL Teams
SUPERLATIVES:
MVP: Peyton Manning, QB, The Berserkers
Surprise of the Year: Antonio Gates, TE, The Jayhawks
Bust of the Year: Travis Henry, RB, Carolina Killers
| FIRST TEAM |
| QUARTERBACK: Peyton Manning, The Berserkers |
Numbers: 341 points in 17 starts
Drafted: 4th pick in the 2nd round (No. 14 overall), 2nd among QBs
What can you say about the season he had? It was the season that you dream about your quarterback having on draft day. Plus he had that cool commercial: "Cut that meat! Cut that meat!" |
| RUNNING BACK: Shaun Alexander, The Sequel |
Numbers: 188 points in 16 starts
Drafted: 4th pick in the 1st round (No. 4 overall), 4th among RBs
Mike Holmgren may have "stabbed him in the back," but all Mike Price gave him was a pat on the back. Denied a share of the NFL rushing title by 1 yard, Alexander had nothing to cry about in TFFL, where he topped all running backs in points scored. |
| RUNNING BACK: LaDainian Tomlinson, T-Bird |
Numbers: 170 points in 16 starts
Drafted: 2nd pick in the 1st round (No. 2 overall), 2nd among RBs
Here's one thing that went right for Tim this season. No supporting cast, great supporting cast, injured, healthy ... LT is the picture of consistency. Now if only a bolt of lightning would KO Drew Brees, Philip Rivers would get to work with the best running back in the NFL. |
| RUNNING BACK: Tiki Barber, Jellypop Fighters |
Numbers: 161 points in 15 starts
Drafted: 5th pick in the 5th round (No. 45 overall), 20th among RBs
No one saw this type of production coming, not even the guy that drafted the former Wahoo. Kudos to Tom Coughlin: He may be the most miserable person on the face of the planet, but he gets numbers out of versatile tailbacks (see Fred Taylor). And to think Tiki was losing goalline carries at the beginning of the season to Ron Dayne! |
| WIDE RECEIVER: Terrell Owens, Jellypop Fighters |
Numbers: 154 points in 14 starts
Drafted: 6th pick in the 2nd round (No. 16 overall), 4th among WRs
If you believe in karma, then T.O. got what was coming to him when he broke his ankle in Week 15. The doctor who put the cast on Owens' leg should have plastered a Sharpie in there for a laugh. |
| WIDE RECEIVER: Marvin Harrison, Collard Greens |
Numbers: 141 points in 16 starts
Drafted: 1st pick in the 2nd round (No. 11 overall), 2nd among WRs
After having his string of four consecutive All-TFFL First Team selections snapped in 2003, Marvelous Marvin bounced back this season. Then again, if you are the No. 1 wideout on a team whose quarterback throws 49 touchdowns and you are not on this team, something's wrong. |
| TIGHT END: Antonio Gates, The Jayhawks |
Numbers: 136 points in 14 starts
Drafted: 6th pick in the 14th round (No. 136 overall), 10th among TEs
Tony Gonzalez has been dethroned. Gates played college hoops at Kent State by the way, which raises the question (since Gonzalez played at Cal) of why power forwards make such good NFL tight ends? I think Kenny Inge missed his calling. He sure didn't amount to much on the hardwood. |
| KICKER: David Akers, The Gamblers |
Numbers: 130 points in 16 starts
Drafted: 2nd pick in the 12 round (No. 112 overall), 5th among Ks
David did it again, landing his kicker on the All-TFFL first team for the second consecutive year. Remember this come draft day, however: last year's top kicker, Mike Vanderjagt, is on this year's All-Bust Team. |
| DEFENSE: Baltimore Ravens, The Berserkers |
Numbers: 142 points in 17 starts
Drafted: 4th pick in the 8th round (No. 74 overall), 2nd among defenses
They were so damn good, Kevin started them during their off week. |
THE SECOND TEAM
These guys wanted a first-team trophy real bad, but they instead get the crummy certificate with the commish's signature and some gold-foil seal on it.
QB: Daunte Culpepper, The Jayhawks
317 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 2nd round, No. 13 overall
He had the second-greatest fantasy season ever by TFFL standards.
RB: Priest Holmes, Wile E. Coyotes
134 points in 8 starts | Drafted in 1st round, No. 1 overall
Amazing production for someone who played just eight games.
RB: Corey Dillon, Collard Greens
133 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 1st round, No. 10 overall
Dillon finally got out of Cincy and onto the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots, but his TFFL team finished 8th.
WR: Muhsin Muhammad, Heelbillys
131 points in 13 starts | Drafted in 12th round, No. 115 overall
It doesn't take long to figure out what lit a fire under Muhsin's ass: That's right, it's his contract year! Steve Smith's injury probably helped too.
WR: Javon Walker, The Jayhawks
119 points in 14 starts | Drafted in 6th round, No. 56 overall
Favre hasn't had a receiver this good since Antonio Freeman signed a big contract and promptly tanked.
WC: Domanick Davis, Torry Holt, Joe Horn, Edgerrin James, Rudi Johnson, Curtis Martin
Each of these guys had between 112-114 points in 13-16 starts. There's not much to really differentiate between them, so why not let them share? It is a team game, after all.
TE: Tony Gonzalez, The Gamblers
106 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 4th round, No. 32 overall
Yes, this truly was the year of the tight end. Touchdown Tony scored 106 points, and ended up on the All-TFFL Second Team.
K: Adam Vinatieri, Collard Greens
120 points in 13 starts | Drafted in 10th round, No. 91 overall
Second Team honors and he makes clutch field goals to boot.
D: Atlanta Falcons, T-Bird
137 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 16th round, No. 159 overall
File this one in the whodathunkit category: Vick stinks as a fantasy QB, but the Atlanta D is great!
2004 FLUSHES
The draft picks you wish you could have back.
QB: Michael Vick, Jellypop Fighters
13 points in 6 starts | Drafted in 3rd round, No. 25 overall
The guy with the richest contract in NFL history wasn't even worth starting for most of the year.
RB: Travis Henry, Carolina Killers
3 points in 5 starts | Drafted in 2nd round, No. 18 overall
Henry couldn't perform under pressure, with Willis McGahee watching over his shoulder early in the year.
RB: Stephen Davis, T-Bird
0 points in 2 starts | Drafted in 2nd round, No. 19 overall
Maybe he was still feeling the effects of getting beat up by Michael Westbrook, or maybe it's just because he's older than dirt.
RB: Kevan Barlow, The Berserkers
33 points in 14 starts | Drafted in 3rd round, No. 27 overall
There were lots of candidates for this spot, but Barlow gets the nod because by the end of the year he was watching some guy named Maurice Hicks tote the rock for the pathetic 49ers.
WR: Santana Moss, Jellypop Fighters
0 points in 4 starts | Drafted in 4th round, No. 33 overall
Chad left him hanging in '04. Probably because Santana wasn't getting open.
WR: Peerless Price, Wile E. Coyotes
0 points in 9 starts | Drafted in 5th round, No. 41 overall
It's bad enough that Billo wasted a high draft pick on this clown, but then he kept starting him!
TE: Kellen Winslow, Collard Greens
0 points in 2 starts | Drafted in 6th round, No. 51 overall
"The Soldier," who was the No. 3 TE selected, was KO'd early in the '04 campaign with an injury. At least we didn't have to hear him talk about himself all season.
K: Mike Vanderjagt, The Jayhawks
36 points in 5 starts | Drafted in 8th round, No. 76 overall
The efficiency of the Colts' offense cost the No. 2 kicker selected his starting job.
D: St. Louis Rams, Carolina Killers
15 points in 4 starts | Drafted in 10th round, No. 98 overall
He doesn't have anything to do with defense, but this was still Mike Martz's fault.
ALL-UNDRAFTED TEAM
They cost a quarter but were worth so much more.
QB: Drew Brees, Carolina Killers
144 points in 10 starts | Signed prior to Week 5
Is this guy clutch or what? At the beginning of the season, he had the worst WR corps in the NFL and Philip Rivers was breathing down his neck. Chalk it up to "Killer karma."
RB: Michael Pittman, T-Bird
89 points in 12 starts | Signed prior to Week 4
Go ahead, try and run over your wife and daughter with an SUV. You're still welcome in the NFL.
RB: Larry Johnson, T-Bird
87 points in 4 starts | Signed prior to Week 13
All the NFL TV talking heads tout Mike Shanahan for his success with running backs. Let's give Dick Vermeil his due, he may be better: Holmes, Johnson and Derrick Blaylock combined to score 268 TFFL points in '04.
RB: Nick Goings, Carolina Killers
68 points in 7 starts | Signed prior to Week 11
"Saint Nick" was a big reason the Killers won the Tech Bowl.
WR: Michael Clayton, The Gamblers
43 points in 10 starts | Signed prior to Week 6
The first of two rookie WRs on the All-Undrafted Team ...
WR: Lee Evans, Heelbillys
34 points in 4 starts | Signed prior to Week 14
... and the second of those two.
TE: Jason Witten, Collard Greens
80 points in 15 starts | Signed prior to Week 3
Witten was probably more productive than "the Soldier" he replaced would have been.
K: Lawrence Tynes, Jellypop Fighters
102 points in 14 starts | Signed prior to Week 1
Just what the NFL needs: another L.T.
D: Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Killers
87 points in 10 starts | Signed prior to Week 3
Somebody in Seattle had to pick up K-Rob's slack.
ALL-VALUE TEAM
The discount draft picks that paid off big.
QB: Trent Green, Jellypop Fighters
162 points in 9 starts | Drafted in 7th round, No. 65 overall
TGITG: Thank God It's Trent Green! Thanks to him, the Fighters were OK despite Vick's fantasy bust of a season.
RB: Tiki Barber, Jellypop Fighters
161 points in 15 starts | Drafted in 5th round, No. 45 overall
The guy was a long-touchdown and combined-yardage machine.
RB: Curtis Martin, The Sequel/Carolina Killers
113 points in 15 starts | Drafted in 8th round, No. 77 overall
He's the oldest player in NFL history to win a rushing crown and one of only two players on any of these teams to be traded. Can you name the other one? (Hint: It's Joe Horn).
RB: Willis McGahee, The Jayhawks
80 points in 8 starts | Drafted in 9th round, No. 88 overall
Oddly enough, he was more of a power back than the speed back he was as a collegian.
WR: Muhsin Muhammad, Heelbillys
131 points in 13 starts | Drafted in 12th round, No. 115 overall
I heard him as a color commentator on an NFL Europe game last summer and thought he should retire and go into broadcasting. Guess not!
WR: Donald Driver, Jellypop Fighters
80 points in 10 starts | Drafted in 13th round, No. 125 overall
So much for those who thought he was a one-year wonder after bombing in '03.
TE: Antonio Gates, The Jayhawks
136 points in 14 starts | Drafted in 14th round, No. 136 overall
Point production like this from a player selected in the 14th round -- and a tight end, too boot -- is unheard of.
K: Sebastian Janikowski, Wile E. Coyotes
109 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 14th round, No. 140 overall
He ranked third among kickers and didn't spike himself all season.
D: Atlanta Falcons, T-Bird
137 points in 16 starts | Drafted in 16th round, No. 159 overall
Fell just six points short of having the best fantasy defense in '04.
EXTRA POINTS
Miscellaneous junk I came across.
Jeremy Shockey is the devil: I just had to put this in here when I saw it. He had 666 yards receiving for 6 touchdowns this year. And he was selected in the 6th round of the TFFL Draft by Todd, who has six kids! (OK, maybe that last six is off.) If only he had tallied 66 TFFL points (he fell 9 short).
Penny pincher: The Berserkers have signed just three free agents in the past four seasons. The last one Kev signed was on Oct. 18, 2003. Guess who? Cowboys kicker Billy Cundiff. In contrast, the Gamblers have signed 93 free agents over that same time frame. I guess David's just hoggin' 'em all.
