June 1998
Philippine Centennial Swatch

|
The Philippine Republic is about to reach its century
mark as a nation. Filipinos will take time out for significant events in its history: the
culmination of four centuries of struggle for nationhood, the outbreak of the Philippine
Revolution in 1896, the declaration of the Philippine Independence on June 12, 1898 and
the ratification of a Philippine Constitution by the 1898 Malolos Congress in January of
1898. These events mark the Philippines as having the first constitutional democracy in
Asia. |
This Swatch commemorates a crucial turning point in the history of the Philippines and is inspired by the country's flag. The watch is designed by Jaime Zobel, the Filipino artist, a Swatch user himself as well as a Centennial supporter.
