October 1996 :

Olympic Portraits by Annie Leibovitz.

Annie Leibovitz has long been recognized as one of the
most prominent photographers of her generation. Her career began in 1970 when she was
studying painting and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. Only 19 years old,
she submitted a portfolio of her photographs to Rolling Stone magazine and by 1973 she was
the magazine's chief photographer.
In 1995, Annie Leibovitz was commissioned by the United States Olympic Committee, the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and Swatch to create the official Olympic Portfolio for the 26th Olympiad. She has spent the last 2 1/2 years traveling more than 70,000 miles to capture the strength, the agility and the sheer beauty of more than 200 American athletes. The photographs are a study of all 32 sports represented in the Olympics. The work has culminated in a book "Olympic Portraits: By Annie Leibovitz" (Bulfinch Press/Little Brown & Co., 1996) and a companion exhibit at the Olympic Arts Festival in Atlanta (text from WSJ Interactive). Furthermore, she also designed a Swatch Olympic Special "Olympic Portraits" based on her works. This Swatch is so beautiful, and very successful in all countries. The backside of the band was also signed by Annie.
