The Godspeed
(2006)

work...work...work...sometimes it just is horrible to go to work...

I had the opportunity to participate in the first sea trials for the Godspeed, Jamestown Settlement's 17th century reproduction of one of the ships in John Smith's expeditionary group.

It was a beautiful day...the sun was shining...all was well, and then the photographer from our competition station had to go and climb the crow's nest.

That meant I had to go up too...Camera swinging from a harness over my shoulder, like a 26-lb. anchor, negotiating the rope ladder up, which was swinging in the wind and with the current as the ship sailed along. At one point, I had to get upside down, my back parallel to the cold James River below. Yeah, the climb was a bit nerve-racking, but once I got up there, it was incredible. Thanks Art, for pushing the envelope...I enjoyed the ride in from aloft.

These are some of the pictures I took from the crow's nest.
