HummerFest97Hey Doc 117, 117, Here is my post to my hummer friends on my thoughts about HummerFest 97. You can see some pictures at Fran's website, and she is constantly up dating it. I loved your jokes, and I share them with others, keep them coming!! Fran's page in case you m isplaced it, I don't know how you could lose it, it is a link on your page, is FRAN'S PAGE Make sure you capitalize the F in Fran1 or you won't get there. We went on the Cass Railroad, and I had hummers perched on my thumb and finger. I have been receiving jpg photos, but am having problems downloading them, not enuff memory:-( I can forward some to you, just give me an address that you prefer for d ownloading pictures. Hope all is well with you and yours!! Your moulting buddy, Bob Hi Gang, My girls and I are safely back home from HummerFest 97. I finally got to meet some of the great people on this list, in person and thru the beautiful pictures sent in by others, and put a face with the names. There were loads of hummers, buzzing around all over the place. I couldn't even guess how many there were!! I even learned how to sit real still with a feeder in my hand and get a hummer to perch on my thumb while it sipped up the nectar. I was shaki ng like a leaf from excitement while doing this!!! I not only saw their feet, I had them wrapped around my thumb, grasping so lightly I could barely feel it. They would fly right up and stare me in the face somehow knowing I meant them no harm. The sound and breeze from their tiny wings was incredable, like being near a fan. Whenever it got quiet I would think they left, but they would all be perching and drinking. I would tilt my head and startle them, but no wheres near as much they would sta rtle me.Their flying ability is amazing, with miniture dog fights going on all over the place. Exactly like Snoopy and the Red Baron!!! Often times a hummer would hover in front of a feeder and another hummer would get behind him and bump it out of t he way as if to say, "What are ya waiting for???" I got so close to the hummers that at times when they were on my thumb, I wished my arms were longer so that the pictures I took would turn out. Gerry lives in a spectacular area for hummers. There are wildflowers growing everywhere. The nearby trees are covered with mosses and lichens, and 2 small streams are nearby with plenty of overhanging branches. All of these things, from what I've r ead and learned from the list are on the female hummers list when choosing a nest site. Most of the birds that we saw were youngins and although I went in the woods to look for nests, I was unable to see any. The army probably could learn something a bout camouflage from a hummer!! I did find something in the woods, and all I have to say about it is, "That was the "smoothest" homemade apple butter I have ever tasted"!!!;-) Gerry showed my girls how to make homemade ice cream. What a treat for them!!! We also barbecued, told hummer tales, exchanged seeds and plants, but mostly we "cemented" new friendships. In Pennsylvania our license plates say "You got a Friend in Pennsylvania". I'd like to change mine to read "You got a Friend in Hummingbirds"!! HummerFest 97 was truly a memorable event for me. I got to spend time with my girls, who are growing like weeds, and see hummers all at the same time!! I even got some soot in my teeth from smiling while riding thru the mountains on the Cass Railway!! Thanks Gerry and Family for sharing your beautiful piece of the world with us!! Now cut me a piece of that pie, and put a dip of that ice cream on it. I'll take some home made bread from the restaurant and 25 hummers "to go" while your at it;-) Bob Hardy and girls SE, Pa.
