| Martha Lizzie Smith's father was James Bryant "Polk" Smith 1843 - 1936 . He was a private in Co. B. 56th Regiment Georgia Volunteers from Carroll County of the Confederate States of America. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863 and was paroled on July 8, 1863. He went home and after a rest, got into shape to fight again, he joined back up and was promoted to Corporal. On March 16, 1865 while leaving the hospital, he was in the Battle of Bentonville North Carolina on March 19, 1865. He was finally paroled in Atlanta Georgia on April 26 1865. Martha Lizzie Smith's mother was Nancy Ann Nichols 1851- 1908. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| James Bryant "Polk" Smith's father was Gabriel D. Smith Jr. 1798 - 1880 and his mother was Nancy Cain 1802 - 1885. Gabriel D. Smith Jr. father was Gabriel D. Smith Sr. 1764 - 1842 and his mother was Sarah Downs. Gabriel D. Smith Sr. was a Revolutinary Soldier. He entered the militia in August of 1780 at Montgomery County North Carolina. He fought for Captain Edwards, Captain Thomas Childs, Captain Samuel Pond, Captain Joseph Paison , Major James Crump and Colonel Thomas Childs. Taken prisoner by the Tories in fall of 1781 and was kept about 3 weeks and made an escape. Later, during the next campaigns was under the command of Adjustant David Jameson and Colonel Thomas Wade. Marched after the Tories into Randolph County but had no battles of note, but took some prisoners and continued to serve until Cornwallis was taken at York October 1781 and until peace was declared.
