| William Abbott and son Solomon Abbott served with "Swamp Fox" Francis Marion. | ||||||||||||
| Solomon Abbott was a private soldier in the Revolutionary War under General Morgan. He enlisted 7 Oct 1780 at Spartanburg, South Carolina, under Captain Dennis Trammell (Tromwell) and Colonel Thomas. He was in the battle of Cowpens under General Morgan when the war was over; he drew a pension of $53.33 per annum. Solomon Abbott was one of the oldest citizens of Spartanburg County South Caroliina, having entered a large estate under King George. He was one of the last Revolutionary soldiers to die in Spartanbourg County. He died 9 Nov 1857 and was buried with military honors by the Morgan Rifles. | The Abbott family is in the "Dennard Heritage" by Norris Dennard. William Abbott born about 1740 in Free Ireland and died about 1819 owned 455 acre plantation in 1803, located on Island Creek, near the town of Mayo and only a short distance from town of Chesnee, at the Mill Gap Road, Island Ford near the cabin of Robert Scruggs north of Spartanburg South Carolina. William Abbott joined the South Carolina militia in 1778 to serve under Captain James Clark and Col. Singleton and marched to Augusta. Later, he joined General Franics Marion after the Tories threatened to hang him from his door post. He served eight months and fourteen days under Captain Armstrong and Richard Singleton.
