Electronic media focuses upon Mass Communication. This includes not only traditional mass communication, such as radio and television, but also computer mediated communication. Electronic media combines the best of the hands on courses, such as television production, with the best of the liberal arts tradition.

The communications programs provide a major with an emphasis in Electronic Media (EM), Journalism (JOU) or Theater (TH) and a minor in each of these disciplines. Students in communications may pursue either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degrees.

The major in communications consists of nine hours in the core courses and a concentration of additional hours in one of three emphases (Electronic Media, Journalism or Theater Arts). If a BA degree is sought, twelve hours of foreign language also are required. Every communications course must be passed with a grade of C or higher.

Com 120Fundamentals of SpeechThree HoursA course designed to help students write and present speeches more effectively. Emphasis is placed on the use of standard diction.
Com 140Introduction to CommunicationThree HoursAn overview of the different types of communication: intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, public, mass, and computer mediated.
Com 150Mass CommunicationThree HoursAn overview of the mass media. Includes the influence, effects, business and regulation of print, audio, video and telecommunication media.
Com 160Video ProductionThree HoursSee EM 160 for a description of course.
Com 240Reporting and NewswritingThree HoursAn introduction to Journalism with emphasis on reporting and newswriting. Subject matter is slanted to train students to publish a newspaper. Prerequisites: CIS 100; Eng 111. (Same as Jou 240).
Com 340Regulation and ResponsibilityThree Hours A contemporary and historical look at the documents and decisions that have helped to shape the communication industry. Emphasis will be placed upon the responsibilities of broadcasters to society.
Com 350Contemporary IssuesThree HoursAn in-depth look at the issues and concerns facing broadcasters in modern society. Prerequisites: consent of the instructor and Eng 112.
Com 385Communication InternshipOne to Six Hours Supervised study of communication in the workplace. Students will get hands on experience in the communications industry. May be repeated for a total of six credit hours. Prerequisites: consent of the instructor and an overall 2.5 GPA.
Com 390Independent StudyThree Hours Individual study of communication issues not offered in other college course work. Requires scheduled meetings with the instructor and the completion of a tangible work. Prerequisites: consent of the instructor and Eng 112.
Com 410Mass Media Management and Programming Three HoursStudy of the operation of mass media outlets. Focus will be on issues and methods of running a television or radio station. Students will complete a project dealing with both radio and television. Prerequisites: consent of the instructor.
Com 415Communication TheoryThree Hours An examination of theories dealing with face to face communication. The course will look at theories of intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and public communication. Prerequisites: Com 140
Com 420Mass Communication TheoryThree Hours An examination of theories dealing with mediated communication including, radio, television, film and computer-mediated. Prerequisites: Com 150
Com 425Communications SeminarThree Hours An investigation of communications social issues. Research, oral reports and a term paper are usually required. May be repeated as long as the topic is not repeated. Prerequisites: Eng 112 and consent of the instructor.
EM 120Fundamentals of SpeechThree HoursSeeCOM 140 for description of course.
EM 155Audio ProductionThree Hours Study of the concepts and applications of audio production. Students will be required to complete a number of audio productions.
EM 160Video ProductionThree Hours A study of the basics of television studio productions. Students will produce and direct a number of studio productions. Prerequisite: EM 155
EM 170Writing for the Mass MediaThree Hours The study of writing for the various mass media. Emphasis will be placed on building a portfolio of works.
EM 240Reporting and NewswritingThree Hours See Jou 240 for a description of course (Also listed as Com 240).
EM 260Electronic Field ProductionThree Hours A study of field production. Students will learn the theory and practice of EFP. Students are expected to produce, direct and edit several productions. Prerequisite: EM 160.
EM 360Corporate Video ProductionThree Hours Study and practice of producing video productions for institutional use. Students will work in groups to produce videos for in house or promotional use. Prerequisite: EM 260
EM 450Practicum One to Three Hours Students will work at either TV-4 or Campus Radio in hands on positions. May repeat for a total of six hours. Perquisite: EM 260 and junior or above status.
EM 460Advanced Video ProductionThree Hours Students develop programming using studio and EFP techniques. Students will be responsible for forming a crew and budgeting assets in order to produce programs. Prerequisites: EM 260, senior status and consent of the instructor.
