SHAVER SCHOOL

The Shaver School was located near the Plains-Linville District line west of Bergton on Shaver Mountain. The land for the Shaver School was deeded to the Plains District School Board on February 28, 1885 by Isaac Fink. Presumably the school opened for the 1885-86 school session. Superintendent George Hulvey, in his 1886 account of a visit to the schools of northwest Rockingham County noted "we have the pleasure now of following the Big River (German), as they call it here, as we did Dry River, only in reverse order, and of crossing sometimes twice in a hundred yards. Not far down the stream is Shaver's school-house, No. 35. There were only seven pupils present here, partly on account of the inclement weather and high water. The same plea can be made for the attendance in several other schools. On entering No. 35, we found them delving into the hidden mysteries of a, b, c and spelling, with Mr. John Brady at the head.
The Shaver School served the neighborhood for over fifty years, closing in 1938.
