McLaren History 1966 - The McLaren Ford M2B made its Grand Prix debut at the Monaco Grand Prix, driven by Bruce McLaren.
- McLaren won their first drivers and constructors championships. Emerson Fittipaldi scored 55 points to win the drivers title and McLaren scored 73 points to win the constructors championship.
- James Hunt replaced Fittipaldi as teammate to Jochen Mass at McLaren.
- John Watson replaced James Hunt at McLaren and scored 15 points (McLarens only points of the season) to put himself 9th in the drivers championship and McLaren 7th in the constructors championship.
- Prost left McLaren for Renault and was replaced by Andrea de Cesaris. McLaren introduced the MP4, the first formula one car with an all carbon fibre monocoque.
- A record breaking year and the most successful year in McLaren's history. The McLaren Honda MP4/4 won 15 out of 16 races in 1988.
- McLaren signed Michael Andretti as Senna's teammate in 1993 but he was soon replaced by Mika Hakkinen.
- Senna left McLaren for Williams and McLaren switched from Honda engines to Peugeot.
- David Coulthard left Williams to join McLaren in 1996; this began the longest teammate partnership in the history of formula one, as Coulthard and Hakkinen would continue to race for McLaren until Hakkinen's retirement at the end of the 2001 season. Another record breaking partnership ended in 1996 as McLaren decided not to renew their contract with Marlboro who had sponsored the team for 23 years.
- McLaren used Bridgestone tyres in 1998 while Ferrari used Goodyears; this gave McLaren an advantage at the start of the season although the Goodyear tyres did improve during the season.
