Page 1: Throughout his life, Tyler has always been a very studious person. He values his schoolwork, and knows how important it is to give it his all.
Page 2: In Junior year of high school, Tyler started to look at colleges. His favorite school was University of Michigan. Michigan was his favorite because he loved their school logo, the wolverine and knew how good of a school it is. Tyler and his father Fred spent many hours researching what school is best for him.
Page 3: As time went on, Tyler learned some very information about costs of college. He discovered that going to a public college in a different state can be very expensive and that tuition rates have been rising at two-times the rate of inflation. Fred went to SUNY Binghamton, a public school in New York. Someone going to a public in their own state will pay almost two-thirds less than going to public school in a different state.
Page 4: One day, Fred decided to break some bad news to Tyler, "Listen son, I am willing to send you to whatever college that you want to go to, but I want you to understand that sending you to a school like Michigan, that is not in New York will put a big financial burden on your mother and I." … "It will cost us $30,000 per year to send you to Michigan, but only $10,000 per year for Binghamton."
Page 5: This news left Tyler heart broken. Everything about Michigan was perfect in Tyler’s mind. He didn’t know what to do. He tried to think of every way to go to Michigan. The only realistic way would be if Tyler took out loans and paid for tuition himself.
Page 6: For the next few weeks, Tyler agonized over not being able to go to Michigan. He was very depressed and was convinced that his college life will be terrible.
Page 7: Finally, came the response from SUNY Binghamton. As it turns out, Tyler got in. Initially, he was very upset cause he knew he probably could not convince his father to send him elsewhere, especially Michigan.
Page 8: Then, one weekend Fred decided it would be a good idea to visit Binghamton. His father knew that the school had a lot to offer and seeing the campus might help show that to Tyler. Tyler wasn’t excited to do this but he went with an open mind.
Page 9: At Binghamton, Tyler was very surprised to see that the campus was very nice. Also, somewhat to his surprise, the students there were exactly like him. After seeing how much he liked the school and the people that go there, he felt very welcomed.
Page 10: Soon after returning home, Tyler decided Binghamton is the school for him. Not only is it a very nice school with nice people where Tyler can have lots of fun and get a great education, but he can also save his family from a great financial strain.
Page 11: Tyler’s family was very pleased to hear this news. Both Tyler and his family knew this was the right choice to make.
Page 12: Tyler left for Binghamton that following Fall. He got a great roommate and was very excited for college. Tyler’s parents have been able to enjoy life much more knowing that they are saving thousands of dollars. Tyler excelled greatly the first semester had a great time. It is now Winter Break of the following year and Tyler can only count the days till he returns to school.
Epilogue: Unfortunately, students like Tyler are victimized by the Tuition situation. Luckily for Tyler everything worked out ok for him, but many other students are not as lucky. Newer technologies and demands for higher teacher salaries have caused an unfair tuition explosion forcing many students to only go to in-state public schools. This is against Article IV section 2 of the constitution which basically says everyone is guaranteed equal tuition to any public school regardless of what state they reside.
