The Importance of Whitegate
I have been struck by the frequency of the Cheshire village of Whitegate as I review the many trees/charts that have crossed my desk. Because I have been unable to trace the 3x great-grandfather before his 1768 wedding in Liverpool, I do dabble with the LDS computer terminal at our local Family history Centre.
The only constant in our family for the four generations down to my father was the use of Joseph, Richard and John for the first three sons, and the use of Hannah for a daughter. I found a Joseph Darlington who married Hannah Tomlinson in Whitegate in 1722, had son Joseph in c1735 and son John in c1743. Joseph would have been 33 years old in 1768 and a possible prospect for my Liverpool Joseph.
My extract of the IGI for Whitegate does list the marriage of Joseph and Hannah but it does not show the birth of these two sons. The source was a member of the LDS church. Through the FHS I found that the source was Church of England Wills and Administrations. A copy of that 1763 will ( Valerie Ellis ) shows that Joseph and Hannah may have had two sons and three daughters. Grandson John is left the estates of Clayangor and Barthomly, while Joseph got the goods and chattels. It is not clear who is the father of grandson John. The daughters and their husbands are well provided for, but daughter-in-law Elin was given only one shilling and that 'she shall have no part or power any further'. It is not clear to whom Elin was married. If it is Joseph then he is not my 3xgreat-grandfather, unless there was a second marriage. If there was a son John and she was his wife then there is still a chance that Joseph left Darnhall for Liverpool and then married Elizabeth Lee in 1768. Perhaps he left because his nephew John got the estates. Elin could have been the wife of John, leaving Joseph as my possible ancestor. The name Darnhall is not easy to find on the map. Early maps show it south of Over and Whitegate.
A word of advice for Cheshire researchers
Getting back to an original family can be seriously complicated by intermarriage. As examples:
Richard Darlington m. Ann Darlington Middlewich 1796 Job Darlington m. Elizabeth Darlington Whitegate 1616 John Darlington m. Hannah Darlington Delamere 1843 Randle Darlington m.Margaret Darlington Whitegate 1594 Mary Darlington m. John Darlington Whitegate 1706 Matthew Darlington m. Mary Darlington Whitegate 1688 All of these are from the IGI and within a ten-mile radius. Marrying a distant cousin is quite acceptable.

The Whitegate connection (contd.)
No-one has done more than Margaret Phillips to investigate the Darnhall and Whitegate lineage. She goes back to a will date 1609 and challenges the parenthood of Job, the ancestor of the American branch. It is a very complicated study which requires the reader to have a copy of the Gilbert Cope book. If she is correct then Job is the son of John and not of Randle, his brother.
In the previous newsletter I mentioned the will of 1763. Michael Gandy has written with some useful comments. He points out that daughter-in-law Ellen is probably the mother of grandson John who is inheriting the estates. The land is kept in the family through an entail. This process prevents it passing to another family if Ellen remarries and owned the land in her own right. Being cut off with only a shilling was only a way of including their name in a will to protect their rights as a near relative even thouh land was tied up and could not be willed away.
