“Free Choice” Reading Log Questions


Directions: Divide your book into 10 even sections. Read one section each night for homework. Respond to one question per section. Do this work on loose leaf. Be very neat. Write lovely sentences that express your feelings and knowledge about the book you’re reading. Show pride in your work J

1. In five to seven sentences (at least), describe what this book seems to be about.


2. In five to seven sentences (at least), describe the main character. What is he/she doing in the story?


3. In five to seven sentences (at least), describe the setting. How is the setting just perfect for the story? Or, how could the setting be better?

4. In five to seven sentences (at least), describe the problem in the story (every story has one!). What is being done to solve the problem?

5. In five to seven sentences (at least), describe your favorite part of the story so far. Explain why you enjoyed that part so much.

6. In five to seven sentences (at least), create a role for you in the story. Who would you be in the story? How would you fit in to the story?

7. As you are reading, keep a list of good words that you encounter. List words that you know and don’t know, as long as they are interesting words. Define each word with a synonym. Find at least 5 words.

8. As you are reading tonight, think of which color/s the story makes you think of. Explain why you think the story makes you think of this color/s. Let your mind wander.


9. In five to seven sentences (at least), explain how the main character (or a side character) has changed from the beginning of the story.

10a. In five to seven sentences (at least), explain how the story ended.

10b. Would you read another book by the same author? Why or why not?
