Curriculum Overview

Fire Safety
Third graders will review fire safety rules with a special focus on home fire safety and escape routes. They will get a chance to plan their own home escape route detailing two ways out of each bedroom. Where is your meeting place?

Bones
Support, movement, and protection. These are just a few of the functions of bones. Third graders will be able to sort and categorize the bones of the body, reassemble the skeleton, and make their own model. Look for Bones Jones to make a visit around Halloween.   

Families
Family diversity and character traits which strengthen families is the focus of this unit. Students will get a chance to explore types of families and traditions. They will be asked to pick a special family member and write about a character trait they possess.

The Eye
Students will learn the anatomy and function of the eye along with eye safety. The mystery of optical illusions and the adage that two eyes are better than one will be explored. Ask your third grader to share their eye book with you. Flip through the layers to uncover the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve, and brain. Here�s looking at you. 

Life Skills Training
Life Skills Training is a drug prevention program which addresses a wide variety of risk and protective factors by teaching general personal and social skills. As part of this unit students will create thier own personal journal.

Andover�s Solutions to Pollution and Conservation
This unit�s focus is on preserving the Earth�s precious resources.  Water treatment and conservation, garbage disposal, and recycling will be discussed as they relate to our community. Look for this year's community project.

Nutrients and Digestion
Carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. Students will learn how these six nutrients are used in the body. They will play a nutrient guessing game and do a nutrient relay activity. Ask them to show you their nutrient book made out of grocery store flyers.

The Ear
Why is the ear shaped like a funnel? Why do your ears pop on an airplane? These questions and more will be explained as third graders learn about the ear. Using a super sized ear model, students will diagram and label the parts of the ear. They will perform hearing experiments and learn why ear protection is important.

Understanding Physical Disabilities
Helen Keller, Beethovan, Chritopher Reeves, Stevie Wonder. Many famous people have experienced physical disabilities. Students will end the year exploring the effects of various disabilities through role play. They will also learn that making accommodations for those with handicaps is important.
