| Curriculum Overview Community Health and Safety In September fourth grade students will learn some ways their community assures public health and safety. Several community health agencies and health careers will be introduced. Students will be able to locate residential, business, and emergency numbers in the telephone book, understand the 911 system, and make their own emergency �yellow pages� for home alone reference. Although teeth come in different shapes and sizes, they contain the same parts. In this unit students will discover how teeth are built, look at samples under a microscope, and make their own tooth model. Of course, care of the teeth of the teeth is important too. How about a piece of sugarless gum? The Respiratory System Breathe in and breathe out: a breath of fresh air is the focus of this unit. Students will learn the pathway of respiration. They will get a chance to see a real pig lung in action and make their own pasta lung model. Students will understand why smoking is dangerous and appreciate taking care of their lungs. Life Skills Training Life Skills Training is a drug prevention program which addresses a wide range of risk and protective factors by teaching general personal and social skills. As part of this unit students will create their own personal journal. The Digestive System What goes in also comes out. Well, sort of. Fourth graders will learn about the 26 foot pathway of hollow tubes called the digestive system. They will get to experiment with peristalsis and make their own three-dimensional digestive system. Appreciating Differences In this unit students will read an award winning novel. They will focus on understanding cultural differences, discrimination, and bullying in the story. A literature integration will also be made with selected classroom teachers. The Immune System Ever wonder why you don�t get the chicken pox twice? Or, why you have to have that immunization? Students will explore the army of defenders in the body. They will create their own cast of characters and demonstrate the body�s response to infection by putting on a play. Skin and Hygiene Why does skin wrinkle in the bathtub? Why is one person�s hair curly and another�s straight? Why do we get goose bumps? Why do we get body odor? These and other questions will be answered as fourth graders learn about the three layers of the skin and hygiene. |
