Curriculum Overview

First Aid
Fifth graders will be practicing emergency response. They will learn the emergency action plan and basic first aid, including the Heimlich hug. This unit will culminate with students creating their own first aid kit and sharing them in class. Test your first aid knowledge with these kids crossword puzzles.

The Central Nervous System
Faster than a speeding bullet and traveling 300 feet per second, our nerves carry messages all over the body. Billions of nerve cells make up the control system of our body called the Central Nervous System. Students will learn basic anatomy of the brain and spinal cord and how our brain receives and sends information. Human Cells
There are trillions of cells in the human body. In this unit students will learn about the structure and function of the human cell and how the human body is organized into tissues, organs, and systems. They will be introduced into the structure of DNA and have an opportunity to make a candy replica.

Life Skills Training
Life Skills Training is a drug prevention program which addresses a wide range of risk and protective factors by teaching general personal and social skills. As part of this unit students will create their own personal journal.

Substance Abuse Prevention
Fifth grade students will discuss physical, social, and emotional effects of alcohol abuse. They will be asked to write a friendly yet persuasive letter to an Andover high school student convincing them not to drink and drive. These letters will be received by the high school students before their prom.

Human Growth and Development
Growing up for boys and girls. This unit introduces students to  the physical and emotional changes of puberty during an intensive day program. Parents will get an opportunity to preview materials. Don't forget your permission slips.

Nutrition
Students will concentrate on reading labels and making healthy food choices. They will chooose their own fast food meal and measure the fat content. Fifth graders will end the unit by making their own healthy cereal box creation.

The Ciculatory System
Pumping through your heart to your toes and to your head. To all your body parts this is how they are fed.  It runs through your veins all day, when you sleep and when you play. But if you should cut your head then you will see it, oozing out all red. Learning about the heart, blood, and vessels is the focus of this unit. Students will get a chance to make a model heart and "bloody cookie."

Character Building
Time permitting, students will end health by reading an award winning book about risk taking and healthy decision making. They will be able to practice decision making, assertiveness, and refusal skills.
