Common Flan Names

These names are base names that may be found throughout the Flanaess in various forms. In unaltered form they are most common in Tehn, the Perrenland Highlands, and among the barbarians of the surrounding wilderness. The following regional changes can be made. In addition to their surnames, these folk have matrilineal family names based on the eldest "grandmother" of the clan. When a woman chooses a husband, he is adopted into her family as a son and accepts her family name as his own. Finally, these folk have adopted the practice of adding descriptors such as "the elder" of "blacksmith" when they do not wish to reveal their heritage to strangers or further distinction is needed between family members.

Those of Flan blood in the lands of Geoff, Bissel, and Sterich:

o -> oo, e -> ee, v -> w, ur -> iur; words with a double consonant are hyphenated into two words (i.e. Chonvan -> Choon-Wan).

Other than the pronunciation changes, naming customs are the same as described above.

Among the Rovers of the Barrens and Flan blood of the Hold of Stonefist, Ratik and the Griffs:

j -> y, ch -> k, names ending in "sh" add "wa", names ending in "n" or "m" add "ra".

These folk commonly to add a nickname such as "Dogteeth" or "Ten-Lives" after the first name; a clan, family, or tribe name is used to further distinguish individuals. Matrilineal naming customs have been abandoned by these Flan in favor of tribe or clan names.

Finally Flanfolk living in the vicinity of the Bright Desert (old Sulm) use the following adjustments:

o -> u, ag -> ai, names ending in "s" become "lz", names ending in "d" or "p" add "os". Like the folk of the west, they hyphenate double consonants (i.e. Amkas -> Am-Kalz) and names ending in "i" -> "ei".

In these days, surnames are supplemented with tribe names (derived from the ancient city or region of origin) and a nickname as with the rovers.
