From Buffalo to Alaska. Day 6 - 8/22/96

Today we bit off our first big chunk of real estate, flying completely across Minnesota and North Dakota. The weather was perfect. Clear skies, no haze, and we were up at 6500 feet most of the way, which gave us panoramic view of the countryside.

We're starting to get into a rhythm -- each of us takes the left seat for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and each of those legs usually has an intermediate stop to top off the tanks. Today, for example, Chief Pilot took the first leg from Lake Elmo, MN to Grand Forks, ND, with a stop in Park Rapids, MN for fuel.

No people pictures today, but great scenery. First, one of the 10,000 lakes of Minnesota (no, I don't know which one).

Next, two of the airports we stopped at. First, Park Rapids in Minnesota. Followed by Grand Forks, in North Dakota. Both of these are taken out the front window, and the blurs are bugs on the windows.

Finally, we flew across the state of North Dakota, stopping at Williston, ND. We'll spend the night at the Airport International Inn, the "official home of the Miss North Dakota pageant." We sure can pick 'em.

Williston borders a large lake, Lake Sakakawea, created by a dam on the Missouri River, and famous for great fishing. You can see the lake in the top of this picture. The lake is named after the Shoshone Indian girl who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition in 1804-05 up the Missouri and across the Rocky Mountains in search of an all water route across the United States.

Tomorrow it's off bright and early, across most of Montana, turning right to land at Calgary, Alberta. Look for some Rocky Mountain pictures tomorrow.
