Answers to the Chicago Water Works question:

From Dan Ruh:

"From a former resident of Chicago:

The famous water tower on Michigan Avenue is all that stood for blocks around after the massive fire that destroyed most of downtown Chicago in the late 1800's. The silver lining to the fire was that it gave the city the chance to invite some of the finest architects in the world to rebuild Chicago into the handsome city it is today."

Editors Note: For this first correct entry, Dan Ruh wins the privilege of having me as an overnight guest, as soon as I can get to Minneapolis.
