Chapter 9

**
“What?” Nina gasped for air. She couldn’t believe what
Lance had just told her. It would have been okay if
it were another woman, even if it was Tiffany, but JC.
A man.
“Yes. I am in love with JC, and I have been for a
while, I didn’t want to tell you because…” Lance tried
to finish.
“I hate you James! I hate you with every inch of my
heart, and I never want to see your sorry ass face
again.” Nina shouted. She knew it was untrue, she
wanted to see him all of the time, but she couldn’t
stand the sight of him right then.
“Nina…. please don’t do this.” Lance begged.
“Go to your fucking boyfriend you faggot! GO!” Nina
screamed. She felt horrible for using the word
‘faggot’ but her mouth had a mind of it’s own. How
much more pain could he sit there and put her through.
Tears stung the edges of Lance’s eyes. It was like a
bullet to the chest when she called him that word. He
knew deep inside Nina did not want to call him that,
but she was hurt. She was more hurt than Lance. He
didn’t understand why this all mattered to him. He
thought he’d tell her and she’d be pissed, but he
didn’t care because he would have JC. It was
different though. He wanted to go out and buy her a
million things just so she would forgive him; he
wanted to make love to her. Was he bi-sexual? Did he
want the best of both worlds? Would JC do that?
Would Nina do that? Of course Nina would.
JC.
JC was different though. He had sworn women off for
good since the whole Justin and Tiffany incident.
“Alright Nina, I deserve that.” Lance lowered his head
and walked back into the club leaving Nina with her
tears.
“How could he do this to me?” Nina sobbed aloud.
“Are you okay?” Nina heard a voice from above her.
Her eyes moved upward to see Tiffany standing before
her.
“What do you think?” Nina snapped.
“Nina,” Tiffany started, “Look, I’m not looking to sit
down and have a real conversation with you, I just
wanted you to know that Lance does love you, and the
last thing he really wanted was to hurt you. So
before you run around calling him a faggot and a queer
think about how much it must have hurt for him to tell
you he was in love with someone other than you.”
**
I watched Lance cry. I haven’t seen Lance cry since
he was in 3rd grade and Joey beat the shit out of him.
JC held him. It was interesting watching the two of
them. They looked so cute together. I smiled at what
I had just said to myself. Cute together. I couldn’t
help but laugh. I mean cute together is like an
80-year-old couple holding hands walking through the
park. Cute together, is Tiffany and I on our wedding
day. Cute together, is Alexis with the boy across the
street. JC and Lance were cute together though. I
guess I felt more comfortable about the whole Lance
and JC thing. At first I guess it was a little odd to
be around them but they’re like family, I can’t diss
family. They weren’t any different.
I watched Joey walk up to Lance and I knew trouble was
just around the corner, “Joey, don’t look at me."
Lance said to Joey who was standing in front of him.
“Lance, don’t be mad at me, it was the agents idea
besides…” Joey tried to finish.
“JOEY GET THE HELL AWAY FROM ME!” Lance’s voice grew
loud and fierce.
“Lance,” I interupeted, “Joey, don’t ruin my wife’s
party or I will kick both for your asses.” Both of
their eyes wondered to mine. They knew better than to
mess with me because I could seriously whoop both of
their asses.
“Look Lance, I didn’t think it would be a big deal
because you, well, were with JC.” Joey said honestly.
“It’s true Lance.” I said sticking up for Joey.
“Look Joe, you and I can talk later, I’m not mad at
you.” Lance was mad at him though. I could tell
because Lance didn’t look Joey in the eye when he said
that.
“Whatever man.” Joey threw his hands in the air. He
knew Lance was pissed at him too, but I guess he
didn’t want to fight.
“Are you okay Lance?” I asked.
“No, I’m not okay Justin, but thank you for asking.”
Lance said. At least he was honest with me. I’ll give
him that.
“I think we’re going to hit the road.” JC said.
“Alright man, I’ll see you two later.” I said.
“Bye Ju.” JC said wrapping his arms around me.
I watched JC and Lance walk over to Tiffany who was
still doing press and give her a hug and a kiss on the
cheek. Tiffany whispered something in Lance’s ear and
his eyes suddenly grew in joy. It was like a girl
whispering in a male virgin’s ear to meet him in the
bathroom. I was confused but Lance seemed happier, so
I didn’t question it.
**
“What a cute picture, I think I should frame this.” I
laughed throwing down the paper that had Tiffany and
Nina hugging on the cover.
“That was weird. She just hugged me. I was like um,
okay.” Tiffany said pouring her and I a glass of
orange juice.
“Babe.” I said.
“Yes?” She turned to face me.
“What did you tell Lance last night that made him so
happy?” It was burning. I wanted to know. I couldn’t
sleep at all last night because I wanted to know so
badly.
“Oh!” She laughed aloud a little then turned back to
her drink.
“What was it?” I asked.
“Nothing.” She said plainly. I think I just about
lost it.
“Tiff.” I whined.
“What?” She turned around. A smile spread across her
face and her eyes grew wide and innocent.
“Tell me.” I begged.
“I told him to think of you naked waiting for him on
his bed.” Tiffany laughed.
“WHAT?” I couldn’t believe it.
“Yeah.” She could barely pop that word out she was
laughing so hard. I’m sure the look on my face was
priceless.
“Oh my God.” I stood up, “My wife is making me a pin
up boy for my gay friend.”
I think Tiffany about had a hernia when I said that.
No sound came from her mouth but her face was bright
red and her hand held her stomach. I laughed at the
sight of my wife nearly to tears in laughter. Tiffany
was quickly interrupted by the four-year-old tugging
at her robe.
“Hi.” Tiffany knelt down to Alexis.
“Momma, the telephone is for you.” Alexis moved her
hand in front of her face exposing the phone.
“I didn’t even hear it ring.” Tiffany said looking at
up at me, “Who is it baby?”
“Auntie Nina.” Alexis made a face. It was hilarious.
She scrunched her face up then pulled it out into a
huge grin.
“Thank you baby.” Tiffany laughed at the sight of our
daughter, “Hello?”
“Hi Tiffany.” Nina said. Her voice was low.
“Um, hello, Nina.” Tiffany said in return.
“Um, I feel kind of weird calling you for this, but I
need to talk to someone, and you’re the only who seems
to have any real thought about anything.” Nina said.
“Um, alright, do you want to go meet for drinks?”
Tiffany asked.
“Um, yeah, meet me at the old café in an hour.” Nina
said sounding a little relieved.
“Alright bye.” Tiffany said.
“Thank you.” Nina said.
“Yup.” And with that Tiffany hung up the phone. She
looked over at me and smiled.
“What was that all about?” I asked. Curiosity is a
bitch isn’t it? I always let it consume every detail
of my thoughts. I was one of those people who would
always ask myself why is the sky blue. Shit like
that.
“She wants to meet for drinks.” Tiffany said, “Do you
mind taking care of the baby while I go?”
“No problem.” I needed to spend time with Alexis
anyway. We had been so busy we didn’t have a million
minutes for her and we should.
“Alright thanks babe.” Tiffany said planting a small
kiss on my lips.
“You’re welcome.” I said quietly when she walked away.
To this day I wonder how I did so good.
