Advanced "In-Air" Pole Vault Techniques

Overall Theme:
Coaches talk mostly about "on-the-ground" techniques. That's natural, since
90% of the success or failure of a vault is determined by Take-Off. However I
think we should spend more time teaching athletes how to finish their vaults.
Warning! Back off talking about what should be done in the air if the
vaulter's Take-Off disintegrates. Many times pole vaulters have trouble
combining good ground and air techniques.
Outline for In-Air Phases:
- The Drive-Swing
- Stay upright
- Don't pull the pole
- Don't "row" the pole
- Keep top arm straight
- Keep the bending pole in front of you
-
- Begins when pole bends to side
- Drop head and shoulders
- Keep pole bent
- Don't pull
- The Pull-Turn
- Keep Head and Shoulders Down
- Don't pull until hips are over your head
- Pull back with left hand
- Don't turn early
- Pull with right arm
- Turn close to pole
- Turn as a "unit"
- The Fly-Away
- May not happen at all
- Remove lower hand
- Keep hips high
- Keep head down
- Create arch
- Lift arms, head, and shoulders
- Landing
- Check top pad and pit sections
- Land on back
- Don't land on straight legs
