What is Hydrogeology?

Hydrogeology

Hydrology is the science of water occurrence, movement and transport. Hydrogeology is the part of hydrology that deals with the occurrence, movement and quality of water beneath the Earth's surface. Because hydrogeology deals with water in a complex subsurface environment, it is a complex science. On the other hand, much of its basic terminology and principles can be understood readily by non-hydrogeologists. The hydrogeology discipline involves field investigations and reviews of the following typical activities:

  • Analysis and assessment of subsurface conditions by geotechnical drilling, geophysical surveys or other subsurfacesampling methods

  • Evaluation and determination of the direction and rate of groundwater flow

  • Modeling of contaminant transport in shallow subsurface sediments and groundwater systems

  • Assessment of impact on groundwater supplies

  • Evaluation and assessment of human exposure and risk assessment

  • Development and assessment of ground-water remediation system design, operation and effectiveness.
  •  Each of the above activities can be involved in litigation. Improper, sloppy or misrepresented data or methods are often the basis of litigation involving activities conducted within the discipline of hydrogeology.
