Bess Wallace Truman Scholarship

Margaret Truman Daniel once described her mother as "... a woman of tremendous
character, which the public may sense, but in addition she is a warmhearted,
kind lady, with a robust sense of humor, a merry twinkling wit and a
tremendous capacity for enjoying life. "

In memory of Mrs. Truman, First Lady to our nation's 33rd President, Harry S. Truman,
the Independence Junior Service League will award a $2000 scholarship to an
outstanding young Independence female who is graduating from high school and
pursuing higher education.


CRITERIA :

. The recipient shall be the candidate who, through her scholastic ability, civic and
community service, and participation in local sports activities, best emulates the
model set by Mrs. Truman.

. The candidate must be a current resident of Independence, Missouri.

. The candidate shall be a female graduating high school senior who has attended
public, private or home school.

. The candidate shall submit an essay on a predetermined subject, as well as letters
of recommendation (one documenting community service, one documenting
school activities).

. The candidate will be selected based on academic merit, demonstrated community
service, school involvement, participation in local sports and financial need.

. The scholarship monies must support the candidate's study at the undergraduate
level at any accredited university or college.

. Applications must be received before February 13, 2003, the anniversary of Bess
Wallace Truman's birthday.

. Daughters, granddaughters and stepdaughters of JSL members are not eligible.
