LEAGUE INFO…

Recap…
Tuesday, August 4th was the thirteenth week and third KnockDown of the Duffers 2009 season. It was also the final week of Round Three of the Match Play Tournament.  As always, members needed to be present to be eligible to participate in last nights KnockDown Tournament.  The weather was very pleasant with 84-degree temperatures and sunny skies.  Even with the combination of KnockDown, Match Play, perfect weather and course conditions, attendance was rather disappointing with only 47 of 55 members (85%) and 7 guests joining us to play the front nine.  There were a number of former members making a appearance last night. Among them were, J.Z., Bill Pizzuli, Mike Moran, Denny Gedeon, and Pronk.  It’s always nice to see past friends and members show up to play and/or have a beer. Member attendance for the year remains 92%, while total attendance, including guests and make-up rounds is an EXCELLENT 99%.

Lisa Taylor…
You may have noticed that Lisa was not working behind the counter last night. Dale has informed me that she is in the hospital (Elyria) with abdominal pains and that she will be having some surgeries preformed soon (maybe Thursday).  Please join me in wishing her a safe and speedy recovery.  She has done much to help The Duffers and we need her back A.S.A.P!

MAKE-UP ROUNDS reported for Wk#12…

Mark Hodgson

Mike Kennedy

Mickey Lima

Jack Tabor

MEMBERS WHO MISSED Wk#13 were…

Dick Ade

Alan Bass

Dan Keller (another quitter ??)

Larry Lahiff (pre-play)

Bill Lilley

Ron Pereira

Rob Sibley (broken wrist)

Mark Sustarsic (pre-play)

REMEMBER
, you have one week to play your make-up round.  You must play the same side that the league was originally scheduled to play.  Turn your scorecards in to a Creekwood Clubhouse Counter Staff Member, asking them to place it in the Duffer File, or give it to Stanny on Tuesday.

With ~55 members + guests and the league ahead of us; the Duffers MUST play READY GOLF!

Ready Golf means BEING READY to play, not playing when you're ready. Here are some simple hints.

More Ready Golf information can be found by clicking here.

Let’s try to have our first group on the tee box by 4:15, right behind the NASA group.

Yesterday’s Pace of play was certainly better than last week but we are going to have to pick up the pace with daylight fading away as fast as it is!  There were a few comments about how things seemed to slow down toward the end of yesterday’s round and it was mentioned that some one saw a group that was a hole-and-a-half out of position.  It looks to me like a few players had problems with holes 8 and 9 and posted some pretty BIG NUMBERS but you know that bad golf is not an excuse for slow play.  If you’ve hit two or three bad shots you’ve got to hurry and try to hit a good one!

Daylight is starting to slip away from us.
We are now losing more than TEN minutes of daylight each week and once again we will be struggling to finish before dark.
FYI…  The Sun Sets Next Tuesday (8/11) at 8:33.  Our last group had better be off the tee box by 5:50.

Please allow our “back-of-the-pack players” to finish before sunset by playing ready golf and playing quickly.

Just remember that ‘your proper position on the golf course is behind the group in front of you, NOT in front of the group behind you!’

Help Needed…
Paul Chichester has a friend whose son has been fighting leukemia for the past year.  Last year, to help out with medical costs, Paul and his friends put together a FUNDRAISING GOLF OUTING that was held at Sweetbriar G.C. in Avon Lake.  This year, the family hopes to “Pay it forward” by helping out other sick kids.  Click here, or speak with Paul Chichester for more information.  Hopefully, “The Duffers” will be able to get a few foursomes together to help out.

09 Match Play Tournament…
Round three of “The Match Play Tournament” ended last night with all matches being played.  Just TWO more, two-week rounds remain in this year’s Match Play Tournament.  Completed match results along with an up-to-date bracket can be observed by checking out the Match Page.  A “hard copy” of the bracket is also posted on the bulletin board outside the clubhouse.

’09 Scheduled Events…
Here are the tentative dates (weather permitting) for this year’s remaining Duffer events.

FunNites…

FunNite #3, August 11th

Mickey Lima

Fred Lima

Mark Clark

Dale Sandvick

FunNite #3…
Our last FunNite of the ’09 season is being held (weather permitting) next Tuesday (8/11).  Mickey Lima and family are planning to have burgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob, plus other traditional picnic fare.  Dale Sandvick, owner of Creekwood and an original Duffer has generously decided to DONATE the beverages at this event.  Please join me in thanking him when you see him!  The drinks are on Dale next week after golf!

FYI,
Creekwood G.C. (Dale) has also donated the beverages at the Final Outing for many of the past years.  We appreciate his course, his commitment to the Duffers, and his friendship; he appreciates our business, longevity, and friendship.  Thanks again Dale.

The FUN portion of the evening will be a modified version of the beloved GREEN BALL TOURNAMENT.

Pick your own 4-man team.  Each team will be given one green golf ball to use in the event.  Your team must then finish the round with that ball, still in its possession, to be eligible for any prizes.

The GREEN BALL TOURNAMENT is 100% voluntary.  Entry fee for the evening is $11, the Usual Skins ($5) plus Green Ball ($5), plus 50/50 ($1).  I can’t figure out a way to adjust for 3-somes so please make every effort to get into a 4-some.  If you do however, end up in a 2 or 3 some, pay your entry fees, get a green ball, and play the game with some sort of rotation.  Hopefully, Mickey will come up with a solution.  If not, you will be issued a refund.

Here’s a refresher on how this GREEN BALL TOURNAMENT will be played:

Each team member will alternately play 2 holes with the green ball.   Hole #15 is a free hole, no player needs to hit the green ball on that hole, and also hole #15 will be excluded from the team score.  For example, player ‘A’ will have the green ball on holes 10, and 14, player ‘B’ will be given the green ball to play holes 11, and 16.  Player ‘C’ will play the green ball on holes 12 and 17, and finally, Player ‘D’ will play the green ball on holes 13 and 18.   To add to the drama, the tournament will be scored as a NET event, so pick your team’s player rotation wisely to get the most out of each player’s strokes.

hint…
Choose your team members as well as your team’s ROTATION wisely!  We will be playing the backside and there are six ‘water holes’ and lots of “out of bounds” that come into play.  So, if you decide to gamble with the player who is getting two strokes on a hole, be prepared to loose the green ball and any chance your team may have to finish ‘in the money’!

NOTE
The ‘tie breaker’ and an additional team prize will be low Total Team Putts so COUNT AND RECORD ALL YOUR PUTTS ON EVERY HOLE!

Guests…
Guests are welcome to attend FunNite for a fee of $6.  All guests will be charged the $6 visitor fee regardless if they choose to eat/drink or not.
As usual, guests are not eligible for the Skins or
green ball but will automatically be entered into the 50/50 game.

Also…
Since next Tuesday’s FunNite play is basically regular ‘League play format’ missed rounds will be held against your attendance record, and make-up rounds will be accepted.

KnockDowns…

Sept. 8th (back 9).

KnockDown #3 results can be seen from the home page.

Final Outing…
The Final Outing is being held Saturday, Sept. 12th, 9:00, at Creekwood Golf Course.  Mark your calendars now!

FYI, we will be enjoying a rib roast with chicken and all the trimmings, catered by Lone Tree Tavern.

Skin News…
Our Skin Committee members are: Chip Dubosh, Skip Skufca, Mark Sustarsic, Mike Milam, and Todd Cramer.

Their duties are to: ENCOURAGE game participation (Skin & 50/50) by our members, guarantee correct sign-in and tabulation, watch and sort the money, ensure there is no ‘after posting’, assist in score keeping, and help with prize money distribution. If you have any ideas or suggestions about how these games could be run more efficiently please see a committee member or Stanny.

SKIN RESULTS for Wk#13…
we had 44 out of 47 members (94%) in the game for a pot of  $215
those not playing were…

Chuck Bartsche

Jim Martin

Don Schofield Sr.

the usuals…

Remember, you can’t win if you don’t play!

Tuesdays Winners were…

Low Net (31) – Rick Lear – $43
Pin #4 – Tom Dickson  – $43
Pin #7 – Fred Lima – $43

TWO Skins were out @ $43 each
#1 – birdie – Dale Sandvick – that’s two weeks in a row for Dale!
#2 – birdie – Skip Skufca

NOTE… PLEASE DON’T PREMATURELY CIRCLE YOUR BIRDIES ON THE SKIN SHEET!
It’s a pretty television graphic presentation BUT it makes it VERY DIFFICULT to see the TRUE SKINS!

50/50 Game…
we had 48 in the game for a pot of  $48
not playing were…

Bob Gawronski

Mickey Lima

Jim Martin

Plus SIX guests ?!?

Let’s try to get MORE guests into the 50/50 game.  Members should be encouraging if not paying their guest way into the 50/50.
I propose that next year, if we have the 50/50, that guests be required to participate!

Anyway…
The winning number, drawn by Chris Pizzuli, was lucky  #7 after #22 (Dan Keller) was not present
Paul Chichester –  $24

Tradition dictates that the winners buy the drinks, or be heckled miserably!

MORON’S CORNER… (Formerly JETHRO CIPHERS)
This is the spot where I will highlight (low light) the SPECIAL skills of Duffers and their simplistic mathematic disabilities.

7+5+6+7+8+6+6+9+8
= 62 not 61 – Paul Scott
5+5+4+5+5+5+4+4+7 = 44 not 43 – John Tothhmmmmm… John turned in an incorrect score card for his Match.

Should he be disqualified and “the match” be given to his opponent, Wayne Cerney, what do you think?  Something to consider…

a friendly REMINDER…

It is each and every member’s personal responsibility to insure that his own score is CORRECTLY and LEGIBLY recorded (both gross and net) on the weekly skin / work sheet.  Even though you may not have been the person keeping score for the foursome, it is your duty to insure that it was done correctly!  Do it right and you won’t end up listed in the “Moron’s Corner”!

LARRY LAHIFF'S SKIN GAMES…
are a great way to   s t r e t c h   the summer holiday weekends and play a round of golf with friends at one of the areas FINEST golf courses.
The remaining date is:

Friday September 4th.

It is also being held at Eagle Creek GC in Norwalk. The first tee time is ~9:30 and everyone is welcome to attend.
See Larry for further details or if you have any questions.

'Till Tuesday,
